There are a few of them in Vic. They need a second look as even when painted in bright "POLICE" livery they just dont look like a serious highway car. I mean, what law breaker is going to be intimidated by a small buzz box?

Perhaps they should be following Top Gear's example...

Interesting question indeed!

Anyone else remember the bad old days of the 70's in NSW when very large men sat behind billboards in very small cars?

Mini Cooper S's - two Lucas driving lights and no two-tone paint scheme...............

Torana 82911 GTR's. Virtually XU1 without some equipment and with some police options added. Wonder if Mitsubishi has had to modify seats and pedals like we at GM-H had to in order to fit mud gutted big foot coppers in behind the wheel. Police seats had thinner cushions and squabs and were mounted further back to fit freebeer guts, and the police pedals were spread to fit big blucher boots in the footwells.

Yep sure do, and you had to be a fool to try and out run a Cooper S.
I had one for a while motor bored to 1310, 45mil Webber, 2in exhaust mag wheels and little fatties and full comp suspension.

Brought it of a young bloke that had done his license for DUI and it had been sitting for several months unused and some twit tried to get it going and broke the pig tail wire in the distributor I got it for $200 as they thought the motor was stuffed sorry I sold it , as it would be worth a bundle today.

But, at night, you could pick them from standard Minis by the parking lights.

Yes, the two driving lights kind of gave them away, as did the roof being the same colour as the body which was a bit unsual for Coopers of the day.

However, the failsafe ID was noting a Cooper for which you could not see daylight through the windscreen because the view was usually blocked by a fairly large driver...........

My brother actually bought a brand spanker Police Cooper S Mk2 from the Leyland dealer in Wollongong back around 1971 - seems it was set up for delivery and the order cancelled or some such reason. Only thing missing was the second speedo on the dash/steering column used for recording the recalitrants' speeds.

Recall my Dad who was a fairly tall man and usually wore a suit and hat driving it along the Liddell motorway near Muswellbrook one day and the traffic was lined up way behind him and anything coming towards him hit the brakes in a hell of a hurry. Classic!

Cheers

G'day Folks :)

Yup! I made their aquaintance several times when riding motorcycles in and around Sydney in the60/70's :( Used to have great fun baiting the "Midnight Flyer" (Rambler 770) that used to patrol from North Sydney to Palm Beach late at night, several of us would sit 400yds in front of it from Dee Why heading to Palmy and gradually up the speed ;) fairly honking by the Bilgola Bends, Rambler sliding all over the shop :D until they stuch a Cooper S up in a private driveway  was doing 80K by the time it hit Barrenjoey Rd :( all stop and get tickets at Avalon:coplight: we all stopped doing it when points came in ;) motorcycling before the drugs & guns.

Aah! police cars and bikes (Triumphs) without radios:D does anybody remember the Trumpets with the rubber edged windscreens?? stood out like Dogs*** with the riders in dust coats :) pre Honda & Yamaha.

Dad had one of them, bought it from the ex cop auctions. i kick him to this day for selling it. He sold it in 1988 as he got a company car, and didnt need an extra car.......he forgot about his 6 year old son......:(

A few years back the ACT police had WRXs but had to get rid of them because their arses were too wide to fit in the seats. The official reason was that police could not sit in the seats with their weapons on.

I still think they got the car that was supposed to go to the State Lottery Office.
.............
But apart from that in the days of the Police Mini Coopers
one particular ocifier used to park on the apron of our Service Station
after I closed up, hiding behind the big Caltex sign.:nazilock:

I didnt do much about it for a few nights till mates informed me that they were being booked.

The next night after closing up sure as eggs he arrived, parked got nicely settled then I turned all the floodlights on and went and had a shower.

He never came back!!;)

that looks like a new VRX lancer with paint saw a ES lancer the other day being used as a general duties car in campbelltown .Maybe the cops are trying to fool drivers that the lancer is quicker than it is . But I must admit they do look good but I am bias as I purchased one a few months ago.

It's pretty normal for manufacturers to loan cars to the cops for "evaluation". just an excuse for the manufacturer to send photos to the papers to get a free plug.
If I recall last week or so there was a Smart car also done up in police livery.

IMHO not much of a chance of either becoming standard cop issue.

This is also why manufacturers give cars to "celebrities". BMW used to loan cars willy nilly to anyone who was on telly for more than 10 seconds.

AFAIR BMW loaned to Peter Russell Clark, Hans Tholstrup ( I gave him a bike also)

I know , I did it.

Word on the street is they'll be sticking with XR-6 turbos and SS Commodores for a while yet. The deal they get from Ford and GM is too good to pass on. Also, the Evo won't carry all the crap needed these days... the Falcon's having a battle with it as is.

My earliest memory was of an XD (351) filling the rear view mirror - gulp!
