How do you pack and carry your camp oven? Last week, i was given by a mate, a large, old metal tool box. As soon as i saw it, i thought,"tucker box", and i can fit 2 out of 3 of my camp ovens in it,(except the largest), i may need to make a custom fit wooden box for it. I,ve thought about packing dry loose food, (rice, etc), around them to stop them moving in the box. and cardboard under the lid to stop it bouncing and breaking.
Any other thoughts, ideas, will be much appreciated.
Cheers all.
Laurie.

Hi Laurie;

I too have played with idea of making a Camp Oven box out of Ply/MDF , I made one out of MDF for my Donaldson Air Cleaner . Storage is a bit of an issues in the disco or rangie , but now I lay it at the bottom of the ARB Tool box amongst all other consumables , pack everything else on top of it ,once at destination the whole box lifts out of the car. :D

Edit:

we have an old towel thats oil soaked that goes between the lid and the base to stop the lid from smashing against the base while 4wding. this then fits inside our 9kg gas bottle that has been made into a moble camp fireplace. that then sits into a gas bottle holder on the drawer bar of the carava or on the roofracks.

That sounds like a neat idea, hope the oil is olive/vegetable oil or similar, and not engine oil,,,,:D,,sorry, couldn,t resist!
How does it handle dust?,, Is it dust proof?,, i,ve found that anything oil soaked, attacts dust like iron filings to a magnet

Hi Diso Owner, Nice layout! I don,t think my gear set up will be as neat or as flash as yours, for a long while, i,m mainly interested in keeping things, seperate, secure, and lessening the damage to gear and vehicle on long, rough, road trips.
Regards, Laurie

well it sits on the drawbar of the caravan behind a landrover, so of course its engine oil :P

heh, nah its olive oil and stops the camp oven from drying out and rusting. if we are going dusty areas we sit the whole lot in a shopping bag tied up to keep dust out. the oily towel gets used to wipe down the oven before use as well. all in all works quite well. will go take a piccy of my portable camp fire that is quite neat and a good idea for anyone that wnat to duplicate it.

actually just went and had a look and my camp oven is stored in a canvas zip up bag, i think it came with when i bought it, that keeps the dust out.

Our camp ovens fit one inside the other (inside one with lid inverted) with trivets inside. The pair then go inside a hobby box and fit in the back of the defender. Carried them that way for probably 20 years. (Not always in the defender though :D)

I made a custom plywood box with a lid.
I put a square of ply between the oven and the lid.

It has a number of advantages:

It protects other items from the blackened camp oven
It protects the camp oven
I hate packing round things into square spaces (like the inside of a Series LR)

Mine fits in one of those plastic type milk crates - not the mesh but solid sided ones with the camp frypan sliding down the side with some foam stips keeping this and the trivet and inverted lid of the camp oven apart. The frypan handle unsrews so that slides down in the box as well. Stacks square in the back of the Fender and doesn't rattle around and/or break. Have done many miles over very rough terrain like this no problem.

Like several others, we fit our 2 inside each other but they just go into an old cushion cover from an old lounge suite! Long as it doesn't rattle, I'm a happy campovener:wasntme:...... that works doesn't it???

We prefer soft cloth bags to carry a lot of our stuff - they can then be pushed and squeezed into the limted space inside the Disco, and also reduces bangs and rattles.

You can buy canvas carry bags for camp ovens. Ours goes in one of those, then sits nicely inside our round plastic washing up bowl.

I cut down an old plastic plant pot - it sits perfectly inside the oven. We keep our washing up clothes, scourers, detergent etc inside that. The plant pot protects them from any grease or oil on the walls of the oven.

With the limted space inside a Disco you need to pack strategically ;)
