Hi All,

I have a 93 Defender and as i was replacing the screw on the filler hole today something weird happened... it screwed straight through and went PLOP into the diff...:(

When I started undoing it I noted it was very loose and I was thinking while I was trying to do it Back up " why isnt this getting tighter?"

Surely this isnt normal, it has to tighten up ... doesnt It??

Any Ideas?... I know i will now have to do a recovery mission to get it back, but why did it happen?.. could it have been the wrong plug??

Has anyone seen this before..??

Any Ideas?

Thanks in Advance

No It is metal just like the the drain plug..

Don't drive it or move it at all

Crap ... If it was plastic then you could have ... at your own risk ... drove it and crunched it up

NOW you have to remove the diff ... unless it has a backing plate on the housing :(

:) Has a backing plate .... :) Easy job

Try to save the gasket & reuse with "Holimer 3" gasket goo if it comes off OK

For a emergency gasket ... try cutting up the "cardboard off a cereal box" and make a new gasket ... or just use "Form a gasket" cement on it's own

My dad had the same thing happen not long ago on a stage 1 diff (salibury). Except he didn't know it had gone inside, it had just vanished, thought it fell out and put a new bung in.
Several thousand km later he smell gear oil and had a look around and thought it was just a gearbox leak :o. Sometime later, all of a sudden the rear diff locked solid, skidding the rear wheels. Kind of exciting.
On inspection a large hole was found where said plug had exited though rear cover let the oil escape. On disassembly it was found the pinion bearing had seized. Thankfully no damage to anything else.
So get that plug out and put some thread tape on it.

Yeah some plugs are tapered and otheres arn't, bad news is i don't think you can by the tapered ones anymore:(
We just rap the plug in some plumbers tape, seems to work well:)

looks like I will be pulling it all apart tomorow... hopefully find the sucker and get it all back together.

that will teach me for being pro-active and doing some preventative maintenance.:)
