Been given a AF-S 300mm F4 lens to play with for a couple of months, very much in love with it...

These are just from one days play in my backyard...

All the bird pics have been cropped.

It is an awesome lens and performs fantastic with a tripod. It is a shame that it is not a VR like the canon F/4 300mm IS :(

There is a VR version @ f2.8 ! Twice the price though.

Took half those pics without the tripod.

Don't worry it's going to get a BIG workout at the airshow next month... just need a second body and a pack mule to carry my gear around, ah the wife

See if you can get a TC-17 or TC-20 for it. The 1.7x will step it down by 1.5 stops, the 2x by a full 2 stops, but think of the extra reach if its a nice sunny day.

What one do you think I should hire for the airshow ?

I have the 1.7, its optically better that the 1.4 or 2.0 I think the big question is are you going to benefit more from the 2x magnification over the 1.7x or will it be better to have a half stop more aperture available? That's why I went for the 1.7 so I can squeeze a little extra speed out if needed.

will depend what i can hire atm...but the airshow is during daylight so light want be a problem, but speed will be.

Frankly I doubt if you can tell the difference in the optics with any of the Nikon TC's when used to their maximum potential in a real world situation as opposed to shooting test charts. I have all 3 and seldom use the 1.7 as it's neither here nor there. My most used is the TC-20E-II and then the TC-14E-II.

The TC20 when used with an AFS 600/4 or 400/2.8 is a killer combination for motorsports, field sports and so on.

Your main problem won't be light or shutter speed, it will be insufficient lens length, especially if the aircraft are doing aereobatics which is performed in a roughly 1 cubic kilometer space or if it's jets around a 15km x 2km rectangular volume.

Well if the first lot of pics that I posted didn't convenience you that you want this 300mm Nikon glass, then try these amazingly sharp pics that i took at the weekend at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

To see some of the below in a higher resolution, then jump on my Flickr Stream. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bordignon/tags/werribeeopenrangezoo/)

Enjoy.

...lens envy...:BigCry:

Don't worry, has to go back to my mate next month :( hopefully borrow something else.

Haven't had the need for a tele-converter, it is a fantastical sharp lens though. Would love to test the AF-S 200-400 F4 lens, would be more useful, but not sure on the image quality.
