View Full Version : Recent Purchase "Angus Firefly"

Hi there all

I would to show all my recent purchase.

The 1960 Land Rover "Firefly" Fire Engines were brought into Australia for the Snowy Hydro Scheme. We have now accounted for 4 of these - but we still have reason to believe there is one more out there somewhere.

This Fire Engine after service with the Snowy Hydro Scheme - originally station at Jindabyne was then retired to the Lake Cracken Back Resort.

I have known about the truck for the past 18 months and after lengthly discussions with the Resorts Managment, have purchased it will be heading to SA for restoration.

I am a little unsure of the exact build date - but suspect is approx a 1960 series II Firefly (built by Angus Fire in the UK). Like all Fire Engines it has done very low KM from new and still fitted with original tyres, water pump is a PTO drive Coventry Climax pump (350 gpm). (it also has an after market petrol pump fitted)

I will be heading interstate towards the end of March to pick it up...and will look quite a home with the others in the shed.

Another unfortunately died in Sydney, having been owned and dismantled by the Dept. of Sport and Recreation, Narrabeen Training Camp. So keep on the lookout for the pumper body off that one.

Wayne will have to tell us the location of the fourth one.

I think you need a fire siren at your home now wayne!!!

so in the words of plato when he went for a prostate check....where the heck are ya thinking you're gonna put that?

if it goes in alongside you store/work area- where does the s1/s go?

I think the stables look not suitable for the horses--theyre a firehazard!!
...maybe they need a new stables at other end of paddock or to the side...and to make that old stable safe you could concrete the floor, put in walls and a roller door and maybe--just to be safe A FIRETRUCK!!:o:D:twisted:

again i am very jealous!! well done ol mate...what date in march you collecting...need a co-driver?...

I visited her owner some years later & took some more BD (before digital) & I will dig those up if you are interested.

Had a little win this weekend, Alex the owner of the first Angus Firefly to be delivered to the SMHEA (the single 1960 one) found that he still have the Transfer box Instruction plate with the Chassis Number of the ex-Dept. of Sport and Recreation Narrabeen training camp Land Rover.
It was serial number #3710 the second of the 1961 batch delivered to the SMHEA and should be from the same batch as the Crackenback Village unit recently acquired by Wayne.

This vehicle had lost it's Firefly body some time previously so I wonder if it is the same unit from the Blue Mountains described by Tankradio2 (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/remlr-member-private-chat/72123-need-tell-someone-3.html#post906876) ?

Diana, just to keep the record straight.:D

The photo was not taken by me but was published in a 'Land Rover Experience' Magazine a few years ago on the day she left the Snowys.

It is an image of the ex- Cabramurra (Snowys) Firefly & therefore was ex-SMHEA.

A few years ago when I saw it, it was near Tumut & in full fire appliance nick.

The article may have some more details, & I will try to dig it up & post them.

Hi there all

Its home safe and sound - was a great trip indeed with a great outcome.

Thanks again Troy for a a cuppa, and the hospitality.

As for the 130 (great car tow car) and did a great job averaging 11-12lts/100km - not to bad as it was a very heavy load.

Just before the border we did a front tail shaft uni joint, was not a major thing as we just removed the front drive shaft and drove the remianing km home on the rear shaft with center diff lock engaged.

Well "as for the firefly" - very impressed with the purchase, the vehcile has only doen 14000miles from new and drives great. The pump runs but will need a new set of bearings in the near future (due to sitting, and lack of lubrication)

Thanks again - and will post pictures later

Nice.......:)

As promised "Pictures"

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/04/696.jpg

The next pictures are taken today in our creek - its a pleasure to drive, as its only done 14000miles from new. As you can see my young daughter just loves cameras....

The main pump and the friction drive primer works, but have organised to get new bearings as they have been run low in grease.

My initally plan is to polish the fadded paint work and to get everything operational. I am unsure about a total restoration as of yet as it is in very good condition for its age.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/03/219.jpg

You can see within the pictures - I have started cutting and polishing the paint work (see the different colour of the front panels to the rear)

well done wayne....

I agree, just a cut and polish... can you get the "firefly" stickers remade? or would it be easier to take it to a signwriter and let him/her fill the gaps where the gold has come off (eg fill in the outline)?

very jealous....Youll be runing out of room....being a mate and all I feel I should try and help you out.....when should I come up to collect the s1 fire tender?......:twisted:

again, well done.....RED BARON!! Now you need a leather flying hat, goggles and a "beegees" scarfe!!

(and by the way, they are impressive but the fact they are all operational is even more impressive...)

Hi there all

Well a tidy up of the Firefly has commenced - not a quick as I would have liked...........but going well. Well its had a mechanical going over, oils changed brakes adjusted and bearing replaced in the pump (the pump lives and works well)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/1204.jpg

I need help from the Forum Members:

In the pictures posted below I am after some alloy plate to repair the rear pump panel - you will notice the two differnt types within the pictures. Its an unusal tread pattern and I am hoping some one may know where there could be some either second hand or if know where is may be sourced new.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/1205.jpg

Holes in the main pump panel.......needs to be replaced

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/05/454.jpg

The two different paterns.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/05/473.jpg

I have also managed to source new pump valves, and second hand suction lines.

PS - for those whom may have an old fire/police siren in there shed for a worthy restoration please PM me.....

Wayne this is a reply to a post on a UK forum.

For the panelling, I am told Aalco do it - 01782375700 could be worth a shot. I think the pattern is called cricket weave, its the same as the wing tops on my truck.

You would want it packed between two sheets of ply in a wooden frame so the freight will be up there, for the volume price.

The news may not be so good, one of the mills that made "cricket weave" in Wales recently closed, so unless there is another mill pressing the pattern you will have to find some unsold stock.

I've sent the UK forward control and 1 ton LR minions out looking for a piece 800mm X 800mm however given that the pattern is directional is there a pattern direction you need on each of the two smaller pieces.

Hi there Diana

will give you a call later tonight when back in phone range.

The main piece I am after is in the picture below (Main Pump Facia) (400 x 800) - because they had a petrol standby pump fitted they cut a hole which is difficult to repair and will be noticed.

If I am unable to find a bit I might use standard aluminium sheet/plate as I dont think it will look to much out of place..........open to ideas.

Have also been told the old Highways Department mobile camper vans had a simular aloy out sheeting.....

Hi there all

Just a small update.......been a bit busy with work so progress has been slowed.

All the ladder rack and suction lines have been fitted.

All the electrics work, and rear tail lights replace and repaired all the rear alloy work (have used plain sheet alloy but still looking for the right tread pattern)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/12/1325.jpg

Still awaiting for the machined rear discharge valves, as they were damaged when purchased but changing them to london round fitting (same fitting as SA & WA Standards).

PS one day the fire service will standardise fire fighting fitting Australia wide (it causes lots of problems........)

And also to add the new seats have arrived from Ex-moor Trim.........(cheaper then getting them done in Australia)

Need to give them a big praise - as I am very impressed with quality and service.

They were under $500 delivered (would have to check with minster of finance an war but $450-480)...........................but all new frames, foam and ready to fit (its standard/base trim in elephant hide - thats what they call it).

And unable to stress enough - great quality and service, they even called to confirm order had been sent (thanks Jenny). They are made by Ex-moor trim but they now only sell through agents.

If you order through exmoor - on line inquiry - the orders are diverted to Craddocks.

PS - still on the hunt for a good SII bumper.........if any one can help

How did you end up with the alloy plate? I was thinking it looked like it was similar to that used on older caravans, just a thought.

Thanks Digger, only problem we had was the amount of people on the road even the Blinman main street was like Rundle Mall.

I am still on the hunt, in the short term I used plain alloy plate and it dosent look out of place

About 20 years ago I got the job of driving from Sydney one of these or some thing very, very close.
Camberwarra RFS had just finished there new shed and my father was vice captain at the time.
The two big guages and that alloy plate shown in the pics is the same.
The vehicle was in very good condition and most likey purchased at auction.
I remember noting it was manly a pumper and had little on board tankage.
At this time the RFS was going from small locally founded sheds to a NSW govt part founded system.
The vehicle only lasted about a year with Camberwarra RFS as in that time they managed to burn out one clutch and break one axle.
They also were having trouble with drivers not finding first gear.
It was sold on and replaced with a toyota which need less expert drivers.
The govt founding was coming though and allowed the purchase of the toyota which was more in standard with other brigdes.
Where the landy got sold to I dont know and all the people who would know have moved on.....sorry ?
When I drove it the vehicle was complete and very tight with a good gearbox and clutch.
If I ever meet the correct people I will try and find out if it got sold off local and its location.

Hi there Ron

The first SII SMHEA FE was a 1960 model #152001861 then subsequent batch of 1961 models (including mine) 152103709 through 152103712.

Which added together makes 5 SMHEA Firefly - so there is still one out there some where...............maybe you might know where it is?

I dought it would have been mine you drove, as when it finished its life with the Snowy Hydro it was stationed at Lake Craken Back Resort for fire protection and the next owner was myself.

I must admit the one I have drives like new, apart from a slight noise from the doors, I was a miles stone while hile on route to Blinman it clocked up 15000miles (stopped for a beer to celebrate the occassion).

I never had the oppertunity to drive a new series vehicle but I was impressed with the power as it would easily sit on 65-70mph, and great brakes (but with 15000miles on the clock its a new 50 year old vehicle).

Thanks for the reply

All the best

Wayne

Good evening - and your Fire Engine looks great -

i am interested in what scale the 65 th is being promoted will it be on the scale of the Cooma event.

i am currently investigating the feasibility of running an event here in Canberra.

i look forward to the overview of what you have proposed thus far

Happy to chat

MMMMM! Canberra is a lot closer to QLD ;)Yes but we can't always ignore the Sandgropers and Territorians.

More than that the Canberra event might not happen over the Easter Weekend because of other regular events and the Alfa Romeo "Alfesta" National Rally also in Canberra for Easter 2013.

Don't know about you but 1000+Ks is a long way to travel for a two day event! I'd rather travel 2000Ks and support a four day event that is held every year at Easter.

After all we have stolen the 10th year from Blinman on two occasions already.
