Yours is a d1.

The D2 came out in 1999.

QUite a lot of differences including suspension, Diffs, Diesel engine was the TD5 as opposed to the TDI in the D1 etc. looks similar tho.

Yours is a Disco1. Lots of differences between a 1 & 2. Big ones like engines and length but lots of others too.

Disco1 ran in Oz from 1991 to 1998.
Disco2 was 1999 to 2004.

There was an update in 1994 so if yours has a serpentine fan belt then it is the update. If it has V fan belts then it is the preupdate.

A D1 update,

D1 1989 to 1993
D1 update 1994 to 1998
D2 1999 to 2002
D2a 2003 to 2004

All above approx as months not included and they tend to overlap

easy way to tell D1 from D2 is tail light position, They are higher in a D2.

D1 to D1 update is harder to tell, the interior is the easiest way to tell. D1 update has more modern interior (hard to explain)

The D1 was also about 17cm shorter in the rear overhang of the back end. The D2 thus had a poorer departure angle and a larger load space that was able to accommodate forward facing rear seats.

The list of differences is actually pretty comprehensive.

How can an older model have a more modern interior? :o

The D1 update has a more modern interior than the pre update.
Essentially if you want to vomit as soon as you open the door then you have the pre update :wasntme:

One Christmas I got was a book on the Discovery, 1989 -1998. It is a great read, from the development of the model, and goes through all the changes of the discovery over the years (well until 1998 D2 anyway).

So if you are super keen about knowing the differences, and knowing a bit more about your car, I can't recommend this booked highly enough.

The much more obvious difference is the better interior of the updates:D

Yes but that is subjective. Some people prefer the older interior (I'm queasy just thinking about it).

To make it more obvious the updates have tail lights in the bumper whereas the preupdates do not. Of course anything can be retrofitted and make these redundant.

I have the older interior in my 93 discovery and its not THAT bad we have the brown version, the blue job is pretty ordinary though:) storage is the biggest issue as there is no glovebox! i just got tin boxes to slide under the two front seats to hold all the bits and pieces we carry.

I found the pre-updated D1 interior felt roomier due to the lower dash line....
