View Full Version : 2009 Range Rover Sport - TDV6 or TDV8???
newbie

Hi All,
I'm looking to buy my first Range Rover as I'm looking to upgrade my BMW X5. Given the current offers of discounts + 3 years free servicing, an MY09 seems the best option.
I'm not looking for options galore - just a sunroof & tow pack.
The question is, should I be looking at a TDV6 or is it worth a fuel efficiency hit and considering a TDV8?
Or on that note, should I forgo the Sport for now & look at a Disco 3 SE or HSE?
Appreciate any thoughts from those MY08 & MY09 owners as well as any others :)

What is the difference in price between the 6 and the 8?
I've got a 6, and I would LOVE to have the V8 but cannot justify the change-over price.
Have you driven a V8? Once you drive it you will want it and the 6 will seem very tame.
However, having said that the 6 is still an excellent unit and one you would be very familiar with if you've been getting around in a Diesel X5. Although - I am thinking "proper" Range Rover with the straight 6, and you might be talking about the "sport" with the V6........
Anyway, I wouldn't think the fuel economy is the thing that will make up your mind when choosing :D

Thanks Spudboy.
It's about $10K difference in price... Yes I do get around in a diesel X5 and yes I am talking about the Sport - the Vogue is out of my price range...
I was thinking of running with a Sport for now and then upgrading to a Vogue in about 5+ years!

Depends what you want. If you want the seating and space and superb off road ability of the Disco 3 then go for that. If you want the super cool :cool: look of the Sport and you don't need the seats then that's the one you need.
I can't afford either! :(:)

Do you need to get a new one? The prices of 2nd hand L322's have dropped significantly in the last 6 months. Then you could get the "proper" RR (perhaps I shouldn't call it that - they are all proper RRs) and you'd miss out on the big depreciation hit that you get with a new car.

Cheers Willem - I do like the look of the RRS over the Disco :)
I don't so much spudboy - the choice for new was more to get the 3 years free servicing and the discounts they are throwing around to shift new / demos out the lot. With those discounts, a second hand would need to be quite the deal :p

If you get into tdv6 sport over a D3, you pay quite a bit more, for quite a lesser car.:p
However, what a warm fuzzy glow you are going get driving the sport...:D
Want the 8, no choice. :burnrubber:
Take 'em for a drive, consider what you are going to use it for, cannot go wrong with either.
however - I live with the bramble rash on my D3, could I deal with bramble rash on a sport...... Just wouldn't sit right with me :o

It’s actually a no brainer.
You are just wasting your money if you get a TDV6 when a D3 would be a much better buy.
If you genuinely want an RRS, then you buy the TDV8 and have loads more grunt and fun.
But as posted above, it all depends on what you intend to use it for.

Even though the RRS is a D3 with a better body kit, the RRS has so much more appeal than the brick looking D3 and the Diesel V8 mmmm noice.

What value are you putting on the 3 years free servicing? I reckon that's worth about $2K. My last service (120,000Km) was $580.
How much do you reckon a new RRS will depreciate in 3 years? I have a fair idea of the new prices and 3 y.o. values, so let's say a $120K car new is worth $60K secondhand after 3 years (RedBook value on a 2006 TDV6 is $54K - $60K), then you've done $60K. Makes the free servicing seem pretty insignificant. However, you are getting 3 years of warranty in the $120K price....
Anyway, if you can get the new one I say go for it and just try not to think about the depreciation. I solved that problem by getting one that still had 2 years of factory warranty on it, and I got my company to buy the car, so they cop the loss. Remember that anything over $57800 is not tax deductible, and that includes the GST that you can't claim back over that amount

Thanks everyone!
I drove both RRS units this morning and without a doubt, the TDV8 left me giddy, whilst the TDV6 wasn't all too different from the beema...
Now it's just a case of convincing myself that an extra $20K is manageable :p

I reckon the D3 body style is one of the classic styling exercises in motor car history - right up there with the RRC and the Jaguar XJ6/ 12 of the early 70s. It is just a class expression of clean lines that also have excellent functionality.
It is also a very good car. The designers thought it through and came up with an excellent package that picks up and develops all the major themes that are important. from chassis design to suspension to four wheel drive/ offroad ability to onroad comfort and handling to a brilliant use of space. it is a brilliant car that deserves all of trhe accolades and awards that it has got.
No doubt like any other machine it has its problems, but that takes nothing away from its brilliance. I reckon its one of the seminal cars of motor car history!
The only problem is that I can't afford one! :( It would make an absolutely superb family car for us! But I'm happy with my P38a. :)

Maybe, but it still looks like a brick.
Actually it's more like a Renault/FIAT van that grew a nose, windows and door handles. :p

It is no more "square" or "bricklike" than any other landrover. You just insulted the drive of most of the people on this site.
Seriously:mad:

I am in the market for a real brick,or butter box,as we used to call them,a hi ace,for work.
I have also been sorta half looking at the D3 or sport, although there are some good specials at the moment have decided to wait a little while.
As said the depreciation is massive, the more you spend, the more you loose. The other thing is next year the 3 TD litre will probably be in both of these vehicles.
There is also nothing wrong with the TD 5 i have ,so can wait, and i would rather use it for a cape trip this year, than a brand new vehicle.
If i had the extra bucks, and wasnt a tight ****,i would go the TD v8,but then again, the 3 litre may be nearly as powerful, when & if it gets here.

No, I insulted it, he was just inagreement, not all of us have to like it because its a Landrover, in my opinion it looks like a brick, although its visual appearence does not detract from its off road capabilities which are excellent.

Relax mate, I haven't insulted anybody, (well maybe the designers)
And how do you insult someone's drive anyway  Unless they didn't get their tee shot past the ladies markers, or they hit a cover drive straight to mid off, I don't think that's possible.
IMHO they are more bricklike than any other Land Rover, and I don't think 'most' people on here drive D3's.
I think they're an awesome vehicle, I never said otherwise, nor did I make any disparaging remarks about drivers/owners.
I just think they look like a van and/or a brick ;):D

In answer to the original question :D the V6 Sport is a good motor and a very good ride, far more practical.
But the 8 is awesome and will give you a horn every time you drive it :D

Most of the people on this site drive landrovers. Why not add to your selection of photos a defender from the same angle, a D2, whatever, you get the same look.
You think the D3 looks like a brick, you think Landrovers look like a brick.

Nah, my RR P38A looks like a brick with a sexy slope at the back... and so does the RRS. :)
It's no coincedence that the RRC, P38A and RRS have the sexy slope at the rear. It is also no coincedence that Disco's lack the sexy slope. How else could LR justify the price difference? ;)
As for the RR L322? Sure I want one for their sheer capability and luxury, but they are not an attractive looking vehicle, and neither is the D3.
Call me old fashioned, but the P38A is still the best looking RR other than the RRS.

Deep breaths Forest, big deep breaths.......relax and take a moment to enjoy ................your BRICK!:p
Nice comparison Fen, compared with the frog truck the D3 almost looks rounded.

Most of us would prefer a TDV8, but the TDV6 is much cheaper and cheaper to run.
The V8 is much more exciting but most of us don't really need all that torque.
I didn't buy a Disco 3 because I would have either thought it was second best to a Range Rover Sport when I was driving on road or second best to a Defender when I was off-road.
