There's quite a good programme on The History Channel (608) tonight at 7.30 pm - The Adventure of English

I recommend it.

The Adventure of English is a British (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) television series (ITV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITV)) on the history of the English language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language) presented by Melvyn Bragg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvyn_Bragg) as well as a companion book, also written by Bragg. The series ran in 2003.
The series and the book are cast as an adventure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure) story, or the biography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biography) of English as if it were a living being, covering the history of the language from its modest beginnings around 500 AD as a minor guttural Germanic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_language) dialect to its rise as a truly established global language.
In the television series, Bragg explains the origins of many words, how their spelling became and their use at different times in history.

Hi Ho. Have you got your Range Rover attire yet? Cheesecutter cap, corduroy jacket with leather elbow patches, cavalry twill trousers, BRDC tie, and a nice tweed skirt, twin set and pearls for The Management.

If I recall my long-ago studies correctly, English is one of the North Germanic group of languages. As well as English this group includes German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian (all three), Friesian/Frasch, Faroese, Icelandic, Dutch, Flemish, and Lowland Scots if this can be considered a separate language. Lowland Scots has a lot of words in common with Danish, no doubt reflecting the civilising influence of missions from my Viking forebears to that country.
