View Full Version : really dumb question - brake light on instrument panel ??

landyprincess

Hi All,
Well - this has puzzled me as I have not seen it before, or maybe it's always been there... and because of my height the steering wheel has always blocked it (*roll eyes*)...but I have a red light displayed on my insturment panel located to the left.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the brake light once you hooked up a trailer - which I had hooked up last weekend ... and since then, it's not gone.

I've drawn a piccie of it (reminds me of a jeddi figher *lol*) - close enuf I think from memory!!

Is it normal, or, tell tale signs of something more sinister?

Would so dearly appreciate some feedback from the wonderful folk here...

Thanks

Lp

Do you have an owner's handbook? It will be in there and show the location of the light. If you don't have one you can view (and print it off or save) it here: Land Rover INT - Instructional Videos & Manuals - Handbooks & Manuals (http://www.landrover.com/int/en/ownership/about-my-land-rover/instructional-videos-and-manuals/handsbooks-and-manuals.htm)

Your Tie fighter looks like the diff-lock light, but that is amber

Owner's Handbook -> Controls and Instruments -> Warning Lights

I think you might be referring to the Diff Lock symbol. Is it amber in colour?

DM TD5 - Thank you *big Kiss*....

Ok - It's definately the diff lock... strange, as it's not been enabled by me or anyone else for that matter - do they enable 'themselves' by any chance???

The link that was posted after I got the link working states"...

Contact your dealer immediately and ask for the differential to be unlocked.

Given I have not LOCKED it - is it something that I can do myself to unlock it, or, is it only accessible via the onboard puter that a dealer can do??

Please help...

Thanks

2000 model should have a lever on the floor to select diff lock.

SALL means it was built by Land Rover in Solihull.

ok - well - i'm no longer a blond but still don't get it *ROFL*...

a lever on the floor.... - I have the 4wd - low wheel drive stick, is that it???

could you kindly explain where please and once found what I need to do. I'm use to the really really really OLD 4wd's where you change the diff lock on the actual rim/tyre thing outside the truck *lol*.... excuse my non techo lingo - it's amusing I know!

Thanks :-p

2000MY won't have the diff lock to the Hi/Low lever but will have the mechanism in the transfer case. I've never done it or looked for it, but there is a square end protruding from the case that can be moved to manually lock/unlock the centre diff somewhere under the vehicle. Some one who knows what to do should pop up soon, but you can probably find it by searching for CDL on the forum as its a common kit to install in the D2's.

Another gosh almighty - an ever bigger one me thinks. Is this something that should have enabled itself though?? Seems strange. I'm stumped on this one or do I simply have another entity living in my landy :-(

Does the RAVE CD highlight the ins and outs of the transfer case aka CDL?? I'll do a search for CDL but hubby ran out the house with my keys thinking it was the small 4wd stick!!!!!!!

If anyone else can help pls that would be greatly appreciated. Is it something with instruction that I can do without a mechanic doing it. We are a very mechanically / technical minded family here...

I'm stressing as we back onto a national park and if some numpty lights fires for the thrill of it we may need to evacuate at a drop of a hat so need to rely on Lp to do the evac job for us...

Seems funny because there isn't any way the diff lock light can be red, just amber. Maybe a quick photo could help?

That sounds more like it.

If you don't have a center diff lock lever I doubt very much that the thing has activated itself. Getting under the car to activate/deactivate the cdl would have to be a last resort in resolving your problem.

If no cdl lever but the transfer case still has the cdl in there they may also have left the switch to detect the cdl position in which case the switch might be on the blink or you have a wiring issue to the cdl switch. Rubbed insulation leading to a short circuit or the connector has come off the switch.

Are you sure it is not the brake warning light as per above?

Just checked online the 2000MY Owner's Manual and the light is stated as showing ON in RED. So now we know what it is you just need someone to tell you what bit under the car needs moving to rectify this problem.

Ok - Here's the piccie...

unless I am colour blind.... it looks red to me, unless LandRover have introduced a new shade of amber ?? Please see attached....

It's NOT the handbrake but the icon to the bottom left below it :-)

My apologies I was looking at a 2003MY manual. I'll just shut up now.

Having said that I'm putting 20 billion billion dollars on a short somewhere. A short brought on my ABS light and I don't even have ABS.

I reckon the harness along the transfer case might be shorting.

Might be an idea to jack up a wheel and see if it'll drive forward, at least that'll rule out whether its really locked or not.

Hi LP
Sorry my earlier reply was a bit slow.
I can't find any pics at the moment of the actuator (if there is one) .

I would also check for a short circuit first, as already stated

That actuator is hard enough to find and engage when you want it to be engaged that I don't think it would engage by itself.

Is Outer Sth East VIC actually Outer Sth East Melbourne VIC ???
(I'm in Boronia, also near a National park .... saw flames already today, and that was just shopping in FTG)

Thanks for the reply, i've done a bit more research on the forum for CDL - trying to get my head around some things and may post some q's later...

Outer Sth East - mmmmm Should be Outer South, stupid me ! More up the end of Mornington Peninsual end, but close enough to Frankston area if that makes sense *lol*...

Landyprincess, if you turn the ignition off, and then re-start the car, do any other lights come on as well?

In the D2, if the car is started with the CDL engaged, TC & HDC are disabled & their respective warning lights stay on as well. If they are not coming on, I'd put my money on there being an electrical fault somewhere.

If the CDL IS engaged, you will notice other symptoms such as heavy steering & wider turning circle on paved surfaces. If you have these symptoms I'd avoid driving on hard surfaces, as you may cause damage to the drivetrain.

Hello and greetings....

You're all going to love this.......

LP... Get an assistant to come out to your disco...

Start it...

Get them to press the brake pedal....

Go check your brake lights!

Now turn the vehicle off!

Now go into the fuse box under the dash.....
Find the fuse for your brake lights....
Replace it

Your trailer has shorted somewhere and blown a fuse under the dash...
Replace it and all shall be well in Discovery Land :cool::cool:

Bloody modern cars. I assume, Tombie, that it is designed that way and one should read the Owner's Handbook?

Fortunately, I can deny all knowledge of that model Landie! :D

Silly me! It never clicked that it was a D2. If it had, I'd have found my D2 RAVE and read that Owner's Handbook re the warning (as per Tombie's post).

It's not in the handbook. That's why we have people on the forum like Tombie to point use in the right direction.

I have read a few posts of where the centre diff does engage, but as pointed out it should be noticeable in the handling which I stupidly didn't think to mention.

we back onto the pines flora and fauna reserve. We're also not far from langwarrin where they had the other fires last week which saw 16 crew out there and Hercules. Then there was the grass fire where Aldi is - again, not too far from home. We're surrounded by Parks either on our backdoor or a few k's away. I think there was a fire that must have raged through the park years ago - still lots of black trees about the place - that's what the neighbours told us too.

Nothing embarassing about suburbs - just haven't lived here long and originally from the east *lol*...

Hi Again,

Well - definately NO brakes or reversing lights! So hubby made a quick trip to autobarn for me.

I've got a question though...

The RAVE CD has an Ampere rating of 25. Where as the diagram and the fuse that's in there is marked 15.

Is the RAVE CD incorrect or is that the maximum ampere rating you can go to?

I'll replace the fuse w/ a 15 rating only because that's what's in there and update shortly...

YAY!

Ok - replacing the fuse worked and my lil jeddi fighter light has gone and I have my brake lights and reversing lights back!

Good to mention for any one else out there that has a D2MY 00 model...

Check the rear tail light and reversing brake light fuse and replace it as Tombie2 suggested if you happen to see the CDL light come one ONLY when you brake.

Thanks an absolute huge amount Tombie2. You are a legend!!
