I thought they were illegal on road. That looks the goods, though.

They are Ron.
The idea is if you want to shift up the beach etc you just stick the rod in and move up.
Many just leave them there and risk the yellow sticker/injuring pedestrians.

Seems they are OK to use in QLD

Fishing rod holders can only be fitted providing they comply with the following conditions:
• The fitting allows the driver a view of the road and of traffic to the front and sides of the vehicle.
• They must only be attached to the left side of the vehicle.
• They must be designed to carry no more than four fishing rods.
• Rods, hooks and sinkers must be properly secured.
• Vehicle lighting must not be obstructed by rods or holders.
Rod holders must be either removed when they are not in use or retracted behind the profile of the bull bar.

One point you missed is that nothing can protrude past the front of the bull bar

The Wilson as shown in pic is excellent. It is fixed with bottom mount behind the bar (not in front of the bar as shown in above pic) which means this mount (mount only not mount and holder) is 100% legal all the time on road with only UB bolt protruding in front of bar.

When on the beach (or in a beach community where local police turn a blind eye) you quickly fix the rod holder into the mount and take rods off the roof rack and mount them. All legal unless your local police view beaches and off road as if they are a city street with pedestrians

Andy,
ARB have both the ally ones and a new plastic type but they are pricey.
They are not illegal in WA as some would have you believe, but must be orientated in a way to cause least harm (vertical) and should only be on when in use. I have spoken to several police officers about this.
Saw a good idea the other day, someone had theirs mounted on the rear door spare wheel carrier.

They are not always illegal to have on a veh but the way the rules are they may as well be, even the u bolts infront of the bull bar can cach a fine if someone wants to be picky. The pedestrian council framed most of these rules and we know how they feel about 4wd,s

Hey Craig you wouldnt have one on your bullbar would you:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p
Aparrentley they are illegal nationally.
I got the one pictured,I need to modify it so it fits my centre bar, mine is too fat!!!
Back door is good, but you can only have 1200mm overhang and the over height (4300mm????) could also be inpinged if you mount them upright.

They are exactly the same as bike racks. If they are in use they are perfectly legal. If you get around with them mounted on there empty all the time you might get stung. roll them back behind the bar when they are empty or secure them with wingnuts so they can come off easily.

Thanks Mick.
As far as I understand whilst in use with rods beind carried you come under the oversize rules. IE 1200mm overhang total front and back and the overheight rule wether 4200mm or 4300mm????
Once fixed with no rods the holder is deemed illegal, hence these new quick remove holders.

It is a very sketchy law and open to a fair bit of interpretation. Generally in a seaside town you would be unlucky to get booked. I have had mine on a 4x4 since 1994 and never chatted. Actually I lie I was advised to remove them while in Perth.
I leave them on on the off chance I see the scrubmeister cause I like my srcubby sliced ready for the BBQ.:o
Of course I am talking about Kangaroo's;)

Similarly, fishing rod holders may only be fitted if they do not
protrude forward of the front face of the bull bar to which they are fitted.

As posted, the QLD regulations are:

Fishing rod holders can only be fitted providing they
comply with the following conditions:
• The fitting allows the driver a view of the road and
of traffic to the front and sides of the vehicle.
• They must only be attached to the left side of
the vehicle.
• They must be designed to carry no more than four
fishing rods.
• Rods, hooks and sinkers must be properly secured.
• Vehicle lighting must not be obstructed by rods
or holders.
• Rod holders must be either removed when they are
not in use or retracted behind the profile of the
bull bar

For dad's IIA, we made some custom rod holders which did not protrude past the front face of the bar. He generally removes them when not needed, but even so, he has never been pulled up for having them fitted.

I've got the same one as in the pic mounted on the left side of my bullbar - leave the bracket on all the time and remove the rod-holder when not in use as intended.

I bought it from Kalgoorlie Outdoors & Camping at least 3 years ago and have used it fairly regularly ever since, including driving with it fitted and rods in from Kalgoorlie to Thomas River east of Esperance many times. Have been spotted by the police driving through Kalgoorlie like this more than once, and they've never bothered me about it. Mine is laid back at an angle so that the rods just clear the top of the windscreen when travelling. Another advantage with this type of carrier is that you can quickly lift off carrier and rods to store in shed (I've made up a bracket on the shed wall that the carrier simply drops onto), or if you need to open the bonnet to replace oil that has leaked out etc.

A good invention in my book.
