Testing D2 V8 coil packs

Can D2 coil packs be tested without using a LR tool? What symtoms would a faulty coil pack give - looking for advice on D2 Discovery - not D1, thanks.

Ongoing problem of car not making any power, once warmed up.
Have replaced ignition leads (quality leads) and coolant sensor.

A faulty coil pack would usually give a misfire rather than just a general lack of power.

The air flow meter (or MAF sensor) has been known to cause a problem like that though.
