Reverse light switch...

I am hoping to get my IIA on the road soon and would like to have reverse lights :angel:

The lights are installed but i have no idea how to rig up a reverse switch. Is there one of a series III or 'fender that i can modify to fit? or just rig up some sort of 'push-to-make' switch or even just a toggle on the dash to manually turn them on.

Any ideas are appreciated

G'day All, The later model (Series 3) the reverse light was a std fitting, all you need to do (to yours) is drill and tap a hole in the gearchange mounting plate, opposite where the reverse selector comes against it and you are in business, I'm sure somehere with a S3 could post a pic and show you, cheers Dennis:angel:

The reverse light was not even an option on S2a, but as Dinty says, was standard on at least later S3s. As described it is a push on spring loaded switch mounted through a hole drilled in the bracket that supports the ball the gear lever mounts on.

Not a big job to make the whole setup yourself, but Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne sell a kit to do it.

Thanks guys, this is exactly what i needed. I'll just go down to my local super-crap auto and get one of those brass push-to-make switches and drill and tap a thread in the shifter base. I think this will help my chances at a RWC (i need all the help i can get haha)

Reverse lights should not be needed for RWC for a 2a, as they were not fitted when new, so should make no difference. But a good idea if you are doing much driving in urban areas, as their main function is to warn people you are about to reverse, typically out of a parking area.

When wiring it, make sure that it is fused, and preferably via the ignition switch. This might be best with a relay to avoid extra load on the ignition switch and wiring, which is not intended for a lot of extras.

don't woorry the whole car has been rewired and absolutly everything is fused, i've got a couple of spare fuse places that i can use for this. The idea like you said is more for other people's safety (not much can hurt this ol girl) but also to help convince the RWC bloke that she is good enough to be put back on the road :p
