I have relatives in SWR and lived there for a year myself. Don't be frightened to try something a little out of the ordinary when fishing this area. The year i spent there was a sabbatical after a divorce, I was fishing that much I was sleeping to match the tides.
Some instances that were suprising for my visitors from Sydney,
Throw a small lure into a large puddle on the sandbank at low tide at night = 3lb flathead.
Having a muck around with a mates fly-rod (just wanted to see if I could actually do it) threw it in next to the oyster lease 5 casts for 3 pan sized bream.
Don't be frightened to fish in the small brown water creeks too. I had a duel that went for a couple of months up against two flathead that were over a metre long, these two buggers got me for more than a dozen lures. Mates asked me why not use heavier line. i wasn't going to change the rules once the contest had begun, I started with 6lb line and i'll finish with 6lb.
Don't be frightened to throw a livey in off the breakwall either, plenty of big cobia hook-ups in the river.

Be careful when the tide is running The Macleay river is one of the fastest runing in the southern hemisphere while the tide changes. Lots of sharks too.

Tight lines and have fun

Blue water has been quite although there are some good reports of large Dollies turning up at various fads around the area. Mates just got back from a LBG trip there and did no good but two weeks is a long time and things can change quickly. I too would go in search of a big Cobia off the wall so get some livies and have a crack.
Good Luck

I hope we get some action.

We are heading out with a charter so he should know the spots and where they're biting.....or at least he better :)

I have really not been into fishing for six months or so. Not sure why, just not in to it. Used to get down to Jervis every few weeks. I have a whole Kingie outfit that has never caught a king. I have a boat license but don't own a boat....yeah fishing has dropped a notch on the priorities list.

Cheers

We've had a lot of rain on the MNC this w/e 14/15th, the Macleay may well be in flood as I write, but should hopefully have settled by next w/e.
You would rightfully expect your charter to produce the goods; if you intend fishing the river, fish the edge of the clean water coming back into the river on the run-in tide. If fishing the surf, fish the edge of the dirty water as it exits the river on the bottom of the run-out and start of run-in. You may have to go wide to find any decent blue water, the fresh wont do the inshore scene much good.
Cheers and hope you get amongst the fish and have a ball, great place to holiday with a wealth of fishing options.

I was at SWR 1st week of the new year and had a ball fishing off and around the break wall. 1st couple of days nothing, then i got to watch an old local catching good size lizards with just about every bait. What he was doing was fishing an hr. each side of the tide, using a long shank hook with 2 white bait on it hooked through the eyes, casting into the current and walking back with it. Within a few steps he was hooking up to good sized flatties. Thios fella just made it look so simple. I gave the same method a go and was getting the same result. Great fun until the little sand fly bludgers got me.

Also on the way out to the break wall there is a causeway, give that a go for some big lizards on soft plastics i found the 2" green and gold minnows the best at this spot, fishing the run out tide. The fish were hanging around the outlets under the road.
OH and don't forget to get a fishing licence if you don't already have one, the fishing inspectors were hanging around a fair bit when i was there.

Cheers Rob

before the floods a mate of mine and 2 other boats fished it for 5 days and got black marlin, cobia, mackeral and a good king, the water temp dropped and fish turned off for the last couple of days.
