View Full Version : Hand Held 5w Radio - CHEAP!

My brother in-law is a hand glider fanatic and he was mentioning the fact that people in that sport are now buying these 5w UHF radios for a fraction of the price of equivalent ones. So I asked him for info and he sent me this image.

They swear by these radios aparently and for the price it would be worth the risk, especially when 1w radios are the same price in some cases.

My son does paragliding.

About a year ago he bought an FD-268UH (http://www.feidaxin.com/en/FD-268A-268B_2.asp) off ebay for $32 plus postage from Hong Kong. The UH is 410MHz-480MHz so includes the CB freq.

He also got (extra money) the headphone/mic unit a second battery and the programming unit.

It came fully open - Tx from 410 to 480 so covered the Amateur bands (he is a ham) as well.

Just went to look for the site on Australian ebay, where he got it from, but it seems to have moved on... but do a search on the international ebay, there are several sites selling them.

If your interested in these I can get my brother in-law to order them for you :)

Not sure how many he can get tho, it may be a single purchase only... but if he can order as many as he wants then we can get these for who ever wants one.

yep just the wire one with a ear piece that wraps around your ear so as not to fall off and the mic about 250mm down

You got me Ron :D

Dont get your hopes up just yet guys, I still need confirmation from my in-law that he can indeed order multiple units. I suspect that they may enquire as to why he needs more than 1, but we shall see.

Bought one of these - 5w all for about $90 all up - cheap and cheerful.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e334/gazzz21/fdcred.jpg

Like all cheap and cheerful chinese stuff the handbook is not very good. Designed for a couple of different models and it is difficult to work out what applies and what does not. I have been able to work through most of it but a couple of things are not explained.

In this model the frequencies are pre-programmed against the channels (though the book goes on about programming frequencies against channels) and I need some answers from people who may also have one of these.

Next to the transmit button is a second button which is called "Monitor Key" and I have no idea what it does. When pressed the speaker has loud hash like the squelch is all wrong. It doesn't seem to do anything else - anyone know?

Secondly I have no idea how to use duplex for use on repeaters. I suspect channel 1 receives on 31 but I do not know. There is a frequency reverse button which when activated an "R" is on the screen but I have no idea what this actually does - the handbook explains how to reverse frequency but does not explain what it is for or why?
Again - anyone definitely know what this is all about and how duplex works on this model.

Thanks

Garry

I have Uniden with a "Monitor Key". The manual says - "This feature enables users to listen in for weak signals on the current channel at the press of a button. Press Monitor - the receiver circuit will stay open letting in both noise and weak signals. To return to normal mode press Monitor again"

Sounds like it just over rides the squelch, as you have found out.

A while a go we could have got you all one for $100:cool:
They scan into the police radio beakons so it is very interesting listening in:angel:

Whilst on the topic, I have asked my bro in-law to follow up on this, but he remains doubtful that he can order multiple radios... hes been very busy so hasnt got back to me yet on this.

As you suspected, a monitor button just removes the squelch so you can hear everything on the channel.

Duplex is a mode whereby you transmit and receive on different frequencies. With CB being channelised, it's setup so that channels 1-8 use their own RX frequency, but TX on the frequencies allocated to channels 31-38 (So you tune to CH1 and actually transmit in real terms on CH38, the repeater receives on CH38, then re-transmits on CH1, so the receiving end hears you on CH1!), hence why those are not supposed to be used when in repeater range. In a pre-programmed radio like a CB, this should all be done for you, or worst case you hit the "Duplex" button. If it isn't, you either have to program different TX & RX frequencies, or set a repeater offset for the channel so the RX frequency shifts by a set amount from the TX.

Thanks for the information - happy about how Duplex works, it is just not clear how it works on my unit or if it has it at all.

I assume it is programmed but I do not know - handbook is not clear at all - if it is not in, then (if I understand the functions correctly) frequencies cannot be programmed. Is there a way of testing duplex?

I was hoping someone else might have one of these and tell me what is what. The unit is great for what I bought it for (a backup and a mobile unit) but I would just like to know all of its functions.

Handbook is not good.

Oops, sorry. Misread what you were asking for!

Yes, assuming you have another unit within range. TX on CH1, and if it is programmed for duplex, the other unit should hear you on CH31. (As well as CH1 if there is a repeater in range!)

Handbook is not good.

Another example of a "Chinglish" translation no doubt. :)

I had a Qangsheng amateur handheld for a while. Great radio for $100, but the manual drove me nuts.

I bought a FD288 which has the same specs and a FD 268B according to the FDC website. Anyhow the casing seems good. It works ok. It cost $140 delivered through this mob in Coffs

www.highadventure.com.au (http://www.highadventure.com.au/)

go to the "Categories" sections on the left hand side of the website and then to "accessories" (last on the list). A handheld UHF will come up. Click on the picture NOT the "5 WATT UHF RADIO" hyperlink.

I have three FD288s surplus to my requirements. They are brand new in original packaging and come with radio, antenna, belt clip, battery, 240v charger, handbook and external speaker/mic. If you connect a lead from your car battery (e.g. via the cigarette lighter) to the charger base it will operate as a mobile charger.

I can supply them programmed with any frequency you wish (e.g. police channels) in the UHF band but will only program transmit for CB frequencies.

I am looking for $125 each plus postage.

Howard
