I was going through some old photos and came across this doozie. Whoops i gave a mate a drive of my old Disco and gave him the o.k to try this mud hole. As you can see this was not the smartest decision. I also drowned it in a similar way on two other occasions. So show us your stuff up so we can have a laugh at your expense.

Well it was just a lazy old Sunday drive down to Kennedys Bay east of Esperence, when I egged my little bro in his locked Patrol to tackle the long stretch of mud first. He almost made it and slid into the puddle, then my trusty disco managed to scoot around him throught the other side and pull him out, much to his disgust.

Deep down I may have wanted him to get stuck so I could get these pics

I claimed insurance for this and then bought it back at auction, fixed it and drove if for another 5 years. In those days you could remove the number plates before handing the car in to the insurance company as I have personalised plates. When I bought it back it was still registered.

The only damage was a bent rod, crook speedo and small dings in a guard and roof.

Thought a good idea for a sticky would be to openly state "dumb things I have done with/to my Landy".
Although we like to think ourselves all knowledgeable and perfect, we are not......

Let me be the first to kick it off......

Some say that a car will not run without a flowmeter. Well, your wrong and I just proved it.....

Sunday, Taz came over to check out the unknown variable with his 14CUX gear. Plugged everything into my car one item at a time and checked it... all good.

After Taz left, I had a number of homely tasks I wanted to complete before one of my daughters' modelling graduation that evening.

Time went on, jobs were completed and 20 minutes before we had to leave, I still hadnt put my gear back in. In my haste, as I found out tonight, I neglected to plug in the flowmeter, drove to Scarborough to get Simones Nan, across to Claremont, back to Scarborough, home and then my 60km round trip to work and back... some 150 odd km's.

It wasnt until I left for work this morning, it seemed a little "cammy" at idle and the engine braking was significantly stronger.
Got home tonight, thought "might just check I didn't overfill the oil" on Saturdays oil change. Opened the bonnet and there was the plug swinging freely in the engine bay.
Also explained where 2/3 of a tank of fuel went too.... and the exhaust smell.... that I blamed on an old Falcon in front of me..... but it sounded really lumpy...... man I miss that now.......

Dumb huh???

Cheers Andrew

Mmmm, smashed them into trees, banks, rocks

The dumbest thing I have done, after playing with cars for years, was stuff up fitting the pickup, when I fitted the LS1 to my Jag (modded sump and pickup), running the engine with no oil pressure as I didn;t fit a gauge or idiot light......

My overexcitment about getting it running cost me a tear down, crank gring and oversize bearings:angel:

All wierd engine changes are assured oil pressure now before start up, live and learn:D

ok.. here goes...

I swapped out the shocks from my old Disco II into the new one..

When I did the fronts.. I did it on the ground.. left the wheels on, all seemed good.

A couple of days later... I noticed a clunk in the front left when I went over speed humps...

Climbed underneath.. I couldn't find anything loose. most strange.

Well I dont have the advantage of a hoist do I

When I had a well known Land rover mechanic in Ferntee gully take a look:

His first reaction was to laugh..... :Rolling: a lot. :(

His second reaction was to point out he won't be employing me.

Then he pointed out.. that I had put the lower shock bolts in nice and tight.... but not through the holes in the shock mount:exclam:

The bottom end of the left front shock was floating free.... it was only being a gas shock that held it tight on normal roads.

Because I had done it up lying on the ground not being able to see it... I simply missed the mounts.

So I left his workshop feeling like a right tool.!

This one I was very annoyed with myself, took 4 hours to pull out with much digging, a set of solenoids for a High Mount and a Pootrol with very large tyres

Well went out again today to Welborough

All good until I cracked both my new headlight lenses going through a river crossing. I had covers on them but guess they weren't good enough. I might have to pull out the silicone

Then to make it worse I stuffed up a tricky descent, landed the front diff on a rock, tried to go back and couldn't so I went forward instead. This dropped it off the diff onto the tie rod, then onto the chassis. In the end we winched the front across and drove out.

I'll be straightening it out tomorrow, getting a wheel alignment and making myself a guard out of some decent plate

:(

All I can put it down to is fatigued bolts in the a frame or shock eyes ripping off
It was a massive winch job, aided front wheel drive to drag it up to half flat ground where I cut logs propped it up and pulled the rear end out .
I broke both shocks (New bilsteins) Tail shaft, trailing arms, ECT
It was in a very remote part of the Vic highlands(Mt Mckinty /Mt Sunday) but I got a faint bit of mobile phone coverage and was able to order parts and get them sent to Mansfield.
My wife, daughter (just had first birthday the day before)and I sat there for five days.
I used the moto to get water and run around.

I had somthing very similar happen out at menai. I had only just fitted my supercharger and new 38 inch super swamper SX, and was showing off to some patrols, by climbing up a cliff. I landed on a rear trailing arm, and bent it slightly. The force of the rear wheel trying to drive foward bent it more like a banana, which kicked the pinion up and snapped the shaft, and the picture looked the same as the one above (car was a silver/black 2 door though with bigger tyres). Luckily the a frame lived, and i was able (somehow) to straighten the rear arm. I had to drive out in (1) front wheel drive, which put paid to the plans i had of shaming the patrols. :o

I think those failures are too common on Rovers. It all comes from the lower link bending and it breaks everything else under there. I was half wondering if the A-frame on the pic above broke also because the axle went a long way under. Gotta run HD links on these things.

tail shaft off the diff uj, lost all forward momentum and started a rear

into bank on side of track flipping us over several times as we came down

"...and the only injury was to a little pinky finger...", which was somewhat swollen, bloody and painful, owing to the fact it hit on the very sharp edges of the laptop as we went rolling down the hill ... was extremely difficult to type at work for a few weeks. Not to mention the lump on the side of my head, followed by a massage headache, the passenger's side was somewhat more crushed that the driver's side ... & of course, having the laptop mounted on the passenger's side, approximately 6in's from where I was sitting certainly didn't help, despite me indicating it would be rather dangerous in the event of an accident ... with the sharp edges & closeness of the said laptop to the seat ... but hey, the driver didn't sustain any injuries. Interesting to note, the laptop is STILL mounted in exactly the same position, prior to the accident.

when one looks at the event, 4wheel drive rolling several times I didn't think that being unable to type was much of an injury when one considers what might have been I was not trying to minimize the traumatic repercussions you would have had being unable to type
