View Full Version : Front Prop Shaft - Kerbang

G'day All,

Waiting at the traffic lights, slight incline, first gear (manual, unlocked high range), slowly take off, 1 metre forward, maybe 1000rpm+, and BANG, sounds like the engine has fallen out. In fact the front prop shaft has snapped :( .... as per the pic (it did happen).

So ... anyone in Perth with a front prop shaft for a 95 Disco for sale, or with recommendations on a wreckers ?

And: why did it go bang ? No prior indications, no vibrations, just bang. Pic shows a 'little' rust.

X2^^^^

where exactly did it brake? at the weld for the yoke or in the middle of the tube??
if its at the weld ide say it a factory weld issue if it was in the tube ide say it was a scar/wear mark that has weakened the tube??
try rovercraft for a new shaft, little bro got a really good price for a new rear D1 shaft..the price may supprise you.

cheers phil

G'day Rovercare:

... "where exactly did it brake?" At the weld for the yoke, I believe - not got fully under to see. I'll try Rovercraft and Linn Rover.

When I remove the shaft I assume I can drive it as a two wheel rear drive ??

From what you can see in the picture, I would say that it has had a faulty weld at the sliding joint.

The question is, was this an original or genuine replacement shaft, or was it a non-genuine replacement (some are repaired shafts) or a repaired shaft (new sliding joint and universals)?

You would seem to have been very lucky it did not happen at speed! Although the final "unpeeling" was presumably the result of the low gear torque.

I don't know the vehicle's history in that detail, but the shaft's coming off this afternoon and I'll have a 2WD 4WD.

Been there done that in an 179 EH Holden - at speed. :o

yeah your lucky you were just putting, i had the bolts shear off at 115k's in my SIII, lucky it was the rear of the front and not the front of the front or she would have been very snuggly up between my legs!!! still scares the crappers out of you as it spins and bangs around!!

G'day,

The Solihull Gorilla must have been on steroids when it tightened the flange bolts in May 95 (perhaps using a monkey wrench) because there was no way we could budge them. Son Paul (Paulie on here) dismantled the UJs in place: it's out, and now at least I can proceed as a 2WD 4WD.

However, with the flaying around of the prop shaft, a horizontal run of the exhaust pipe was apparently hit, breaking/opening the seal at the manifold - a job for next weekend.

In the pic the failure was at the right (back end), at the expansion joint (?), the two parts to the left were separated in place for easier removal, but were only hanging on by an inch of metal.

The saga continues, and the grease nipples are there for a reason ...

Cheers,

Grant

Bought a new front prop for the County at Rovacraft that is same as the D1 just over a week ago. Price was quite reasonable - better than I dared expect.

I figured that if I was buying a used one I would have to replace the UJs as a precaution anyway.

G'day LoveMyV8County

.... and the $64,000 question is .... what's "reasonable"; are your daring expectations much more daring than mine ? (PM ?)

My thinking is a straight new one from Rovercraft, or someone similar, may be better than a wreckers out of a 700,000km monumental prang.
