Hi All

This is my first post.

I'm looking for an underbody water tank for my disco 2, preferably stainless steel. Anybody knows who makes one or has detailed plans?

Cheers

Yes, Long Range Automotive make these in 50litre sill tanks and from Stainless steel.

I got a quote from LRA 2 or 3 months ago. Cost was $800 (supposedly discounted from 'normal') plus installation or delivery. Their tank usually fits on the LHS as they do a mirror image tank on the other side for an extended fuel tank.

Hi, we made my own out of some 150mm stainless tube, 930mm long. Weld in some ends, on one end weld in a 1/2 inch BSP fitting at the bottom and a 1/8 fitting at the top for a breather. These were mounted against the chassis on each side of the car - used some stainless straps to secure these.

I connected a 1/2 inch hose with an inline pump and a tap on the bull bar. The pump switch is under the bonnet.

A similar tank on each side of the car - around 15 usable litres each or 30litres all up. This worked well for us - only problem we had no gauge, but when we had to swap tanks it was time to fill the other. This was drinking and cooking water only.

We travelled on some pretty ordinary roads and never had a problem with the mounting only occasional noise from a 1/2 full tank.

Thanks gents

Long Range advised their tank kit is now $900 + $250 to fit.

When I'm travelling i carry a couple of jerries in the trailer but I like to have some built into the car for emergencies or when I drop the trailer.

50 litres would be nice but at $1150 compared to a couple of hundred max i think two 6" stainless pipes and 30 litres will be fine

cheers

I couldn't justify the expense of the LRA tank either. On most trips I used to take 2 x 15L water containers which I carried behind front seats on the floor. So instead, for $100, I bought a 35L water bladder and made a ply housing to cover it so I can stack stuff on top. Have held down using straps running from rear seat hinges to a bar under front seat. Just tried to photo but the ply is covered in black carpet and so you can't see it in the photo. If anyone would really like to see it, I can remove and photo out of vehicle.

im planning my drawer system in the back, and what im planning on doing is converting the 2 pockets on each side into water tanks with a hose running beetween the 2 and one out to the rear bar it will just be gravity fed, the reason im using this spot is because of the way im settin the back up it will be a pain to use the space for anyting else, im thinking of making it out of thin gal sheet riveted togeher and using sikaflex to seal it all up,sounds good in theroy

Thanks for the compliment:D:D

I think they are well enough protected

IMHO these less exposed than the airbag compressor. The front of the tank is protected by a cross support and the whole length is up against the chassis rail and strapped to it.

These have been on our Disco for about 6 years now and we have been on a lot of ordinary roads, probably the roughest out to the coast at Shellbourne Bay, to the mouth of the Calvert River the Cape twice, into Gove and surrounding areas 3 times etc etc. If they were going to come off they would have by now.

Hi Jeep Boy. I thought of doing what you propose as I, too, have a rear drawer system which makes access to the paniers difficult. What put me off is that the weight of the water, which I assume would be 30 to 40 kg, will all be over or behind the rear axle, which alreadys carries more than its fair share. Benefit of under body or behind front seat is that it distributes weight more evenly and is also much lower down, helping the center of gravity.

Would something like this be an alternative.

For u D1 owners out there, i saw a guy with one of those plastic smart bar bullbars. He had sealed up all the moulding holes, plumbed an inlet and out let connection, and used it to carry 10-15 liters, aware obviously of the extra weight, so i assume that he was filling it to approach the weight of a steel bar.
