View Full Version : Kevin is limping

My wife was driving Kevin (3.9v8i Man) she pulled up around the corner from the bank and when i got back she could not get him into gear. I felt the clutch and there is still pressure there but goes 75% of the travel then sort of locks up. I think hydraulic pressure is there(as there is 50% of fluid still in the reservoir). My thoughts are either a slave cylinder or a fork from the clutch has broken. The thrust bearing has been noisy (i think it was thrust bearing, Noisy when foot is just on the pedal) But apart from that there has been no symptoms.
Does any one have any ideas as i would like to get onto it asap. And is there any recommendations of which clutch to buy if it is stuffed. Thanks in advance Brett

Yep the trust bearing (Or throw out bearing??) had siezed it had a plastic carrier that had melted. Will replace the clutch even though it was only half worn just to be safe.

don,t forget to check the flywheel for any damage/wear. no point doing the job twice

Check the "spigot bush / bearing" inside, at the end of the crank

Good to hear you got to that spigot bush / bearing ... so many folks forget it, or are not aware, and then wonder why their new clutch has vibrations or chatters, later on

I've converted Holdens , Fords & Valiants from manual to auto & vise / versa (but not rover)
All was just bolt up ABC .... The only difference as far as the motor goes is ... The Cam .... but you really wouldn't notice it IMHO
Remove gearbox / Clutch / Fly wheel ..... Bolt up flex plate / Auto / Auto shift stick
It should just fit .... Unless the transfer box & wiring is different .... A little "online Q & A" would resolve that :)
Just a thought :)

Will stick with manual at this stage.:D
I have a H/D RPM clutch on the way $340 from repco. It was a clearance item so i was lucky.
Today i will bolt on the manifolds and get the old spigot bush out. I have replaced some broken studs in the manifold and got new bolts for the gearbox aswell as new nylocks for the tailshafts.
Need to get the gearbox onto a trailer and take it down to hot wash it and fix a leak from the transfer case. I won't be able to get the clutch in this weekend as i'm working but hopefully do it on tuesday.

If it's a brass bush .... remember to Lube it via "soak it in oil" prior to installing it
Some do a "pressure impregnation" ... others let it soak for 24 hours

Gearbox back in and running i have had a few troubles but going now. The clutch peddle has to be pushed hard against the carpet to get it into reverse but otherwise it is fine. Now back to enjoying him again.:p:twisted:
