I need some inspiration so please post up pics of your spare wheel carriers.

Here's mine

Was a standard ARB rear bar with a LRA spare wheel swing away.

ARB bar has been modified to suit the 2" body lift and the corners have been trimmed and braced (rear quarter panels cut to suit). I have spent about 10 hours of cutting and welding on it.

Spare wheel carrier also houses an axe, shovel, and reversing/work light

Cheers

I have a ripper on mine but I cant find any pics of it. My FIL is a wiz on welding things up and he made 3 of these for our vehicles.

cheers mate. I am fortunate in that I work in the maintenance dept for an aluminium extrusion company, so I have access to welders, a machine shop, and a sheet metal shop and various other machines. Even better, an endless supply of of ally:D Having said that, the bar and wheel carrier will be made of steel, as aluminium tends to crack at the welds in these sort of applications. If you could get some pics up, I'd appreciate it. I think the hardest part will be the design, so any ideas will be gratefully accepted.

I'm about to make one for mine out of a box trailer stub axle and bearings from Superchump auto. Just have to machine up a hub to weld the tyre frame on.

Thanks for the pics guys. I'm coming to the conclusion that a axle hub seams to be the way to go. My only problem is i'm going to have to make a rear bar to mount the carrier on. What sort of price are second hand arb bars coming in at? I looked at a home made job out of the quokka last week not worth half of what he wanted. Failing that ill probobly make a bar similar to the arb one.

In the next few weeks I will be doing one as well. can you post it up as I was also thinking of using a trailer stub from supercrap auto/trailer shop with a steel frame etc

would be interested to see how it all goes together. are you gunna use a ARB bar to mount it on??

ARB rear bar is defintely the way to go, as its a very solid starting point. As already mentioned, e-bay is the best place to find em now, usually $100-$200.
Good luck with it.

I have noticed that I have a slight bend/curve along the length of my rear arb bar. I do think it is from the weight of the spare wheel. I wll get some pictures of the curve - more noticeable from the inside where you can see the length of pipe that runs through the middle of the channel.

Anyone else noticed this on theirs?

Some pics of the Rangie rear ARB bar Modified , I will need to shorten the Swing away Arm as it is Way too Long and puts too much weight on Pivot ( not my work either )

and a jerry can holder with be incorporated into the Mods.

and I know this is a Disco Swing away but might be ok for inspiration , incidentally I think a Kaymar from a S1 will fit a RRC , may require a couple of mods .

I was in supercrap today and checked out the stub axles and bearings but couldnt find anything to house the bearings on the stub..what did you have in mind there :p A lathe:D and heavy wall pipe or solid shaft bored and machined. Depends what I trip over at the time I do it:p Will post up pics as I go. I have an ARB Bar of three here;) So will be based on one.
I've let my build up thread die for now but will dig it up soon if it's still there:o

2nd hand ARB bars sell for about $200, i just sold one for $150

get your stub axle and hub from a Trailer place... the hubs at Supercrap are not machined steel and they are complete hubs, not hub centers..

It makes me wonder how all the good things are over east:(

I have been thinking to make the bar out of 3mm steel but folded to a very similar shape as the original bumper and integrate the original end caps into the bar. Then I'll mount the carrier onto the bar.

I figure the original back bumper looks aright, and if it aint broke... This one will just be tough too.
