Ok all, is there anyone out there in Brisbane who has fencing equipment I can borrow for a couple of weeks? If you have been following any of the threads about the bushfires you would have seen that I am planning to go down to Victoria and help a little with some of the cleanup. There is some work to be done this weekend and possibly through the next week or two that will involve repairing fences to keep stock from wandering. I think that fence strainers and perhaps stuff for driving pickets or digging holes would be useful.

Anybody who can help either respond here or send me a PM.

In the same vein - anybody else who can come down there and give a hand is also welcome to send me a PM or answer here. I will be leaving Thursday afternoon and may be down there for a couple of weeks but I am sure shorter visits would still be appreciated. Self sufficient camping required. Own vehicle probably best though I am sure I could take a passenger or two as well. I have no special skills I am just going to be labour with someone else directing or perhaps delivery of stuff using my trailer.

Thanks,

TimJ.

I've got a star picket post rammer and a fence strainer that you are welcome to borrow.

I'm not in the Brisbane area but at the southern end of the F3 Freeway near Hornsby. If you're driving down via the Pacific Hwy, you will pass within a few hundred meters of my place.

Drop me a PM if you wish to follow up the offer.

Thanks guys.

George130 - I will probably not be there till late Friday night as there is 20+ hours driving if I go down the Newell and I can't get away till Thursday afternoon. Will see you there though.

Xtreme - I hadn't been planning to go via the pacific but I will let you know. I appreciate the offer. I will have to study the maps as it is just possible it is easier to get to the Labertouche area from the east but I don't think so.

Tim, through Melb is the quickest if you are opting for the Newell. Use CityLink/Monash - traffic travels like Brisbane to Gold Coast - close and fast!

Tolls on CityLink/Monash about $10 max. Got an eTag? Reads all tags.

Have a safe trip.

Started looking at the best way.
So far my GPS wanted to go through Kinglake:(. Don't think that will be possible. No eTag either so will come up with a plan.

TimJ No worries. It's about 7 hours for me so I plan to travel to my brothers in Wadonga in the day and then head on down that evening. Will kip down at will kip in the rig Fri night ready to start in the morning probably.

If you are heading for Labertouche, I have strainers, star picket driver, fencing pliers and access to a powered auger.
I live in Warragul, about 20 mins from Labertouche.

Mate call into your local Elders or Wesfarmers(or similar) rural suppliers, tell them what you are doing and see if they will donate the kit or part of.
You can always pass the kit on to other vollies before you return home.

I was planning to do that tomorrow. See what sort of deal they could do.

Im sure if you offer to appear in the local paper with the gear AND LANDROVER for a story you would get all the fencing gear needed.

Just an update on this one.

I went looking for a hire company that had something I could use and found that All Hire in East Brisbane had the fence strainers and star picket driver for hire. I have hired stuff off them once before and they were good to deal with so I went over there and talked to them and they are going to give me a two week hire of for free. Can't ask for more than that so perhaps someone here will think of them when hiring gear.

Well if I was in Victoria I would be there to help I'm fantastic with farm fencing. Particularly electric. I only object to using barbed wire I think it is evil and its use should be illegal. If you've ever strained it and it snaps back at you I can't tell you how bad it is.

I sent some fencing gear through the horse council so I hope that ends up helping out somewhere.....

Can I make some suggestions:
for horses & cattle fences: leave a space about a 1/2 a foot off the ground this is something we do that stops grass building under the fences becoming a fire hazard as they can stick their nose under without the whole head getting in and ripping the fence apart.
Obviously you can't do this with sheep as they will get out. Sheep need fences pretty much flush to the ground.
Hang the ring-lock with smallest squares lower; if the small squares are on the lower part of the fence it stops the stock getting their feet stuck in it and lambs escaping through the bigger squares.
Star pickets on there own aren't great for fencing you need solid post on the fence line. Large strainer post for corners and 3 to 4 star pickets between each post.
Lastly I can't emphasis enough valuable it is to have electric wire on the fence especially with cattle they are the worst with fences. If they have nothing in their paddocks they will be more likely to try to push through the fence. Electric wire gives them are sharp reminder not to try.

Maun Pliers are better for cutting a reasonable one is $30-$50 standard pliers are okay for tying up but you want short handles because the long handled ones are too hard to use.
There is a product called a fencing tool it looks like a claw hammer & a parrot pliers in one it makes the job 2x as fast they are pretty cheap CRT might have them or Elders/Wesfarmers.
