I have just installed Ubuntu on my computer. It would not install directly from disc except as a program within windows. Now I have a dual boot system with both Ubuntu and Windows working fine. My question is this: Can i delete Windows off the computer without upsetting Ubuntu? On installation Ubuntu created partitions on hard drive. Jim

If you have only just recently installed Ubuntu, why not just start from scratch with a clean HD?
If the problem is installing from the CD, have you set the computer to boot from the CD drive?

When you first tried to install it did you boot off the Ubuntu CD, or just try and install from within windows.
Usually it would boot up from the CD and install happily without any Windows involvement.
You should be able to get rid of the Windows installation without killing Ubuntu, but I think it will be a bit messy afterwards and you are better off getting rid of Windows and doing a clean install of Ubuntu.
Not sure how familiar you are with this, but have you tried completely removing the windows partition before trying to install Ubuntu?

Have you read any articles like this one?
How to Install Ubuntu : The Ubuntu Installation Guide (http://seogadget.co.uk/the-ubuntu-installation-guide/)
If you do a search on "install ubuntu", you will find a lot of helpful articles.

ubuntu uses grub as the boot loader
/boot folder has the config files usually, you can just edit the control file remove the windows entry re run the the grub config and it takes the entry out..
but you need to be careful :p

You can do as Incisor suggests - but do you need to remove Windows from Grub?
Ubuntu will read and write to the Windows partition, and there is nothing to stop you from simply moving anything you want to keep from there to one of your Linux partitions, and deleting the rest, or simply reformatting it as a Linux partition.
A further alternative is to reinstall Ubuntu, but choose the option to do a custom partition, when you will have the opportunity to keep your Home directory unchanged - which has everything you want in it, although if you want to keep anything from the Windows partition, copy or move it to your Home directory first. But back up anything you really need first, just in case of finger trouble! (I have installed various distributions of Linux four or five times and retained my Home directory this way without problems, most recently changing from Suse to Ubuntu.

Thanks all!!!:D:D When I tried to load from cd after entering ":english" the computer printed up a whole stack of info on the screen and said to type help, which I did. It then listed a whole range of commands, none of which did anything when typed in so I did the next trick and loaded it inside windows. I might leave it as a dual boot machine for a while and if I get round to fitting a larger hard drive I might stars from scratch. Jim
