Hi all, new to the forum so don't know if this is how to do it so..... we are off to Tassie in 2 weeks for a 5 week stay. We are looking for suggestions from members of places to camp - we are traveling in our 96 Defender with off road van (small) and puppy (also small). Any suggestions? Thanks heaps. Marty :D

Tassie is the state of free camping...it is a great place. We spent two weeks there after Christmas making it up as we went along.
Two good books:
The Guide to Free Camping in Tasmania..and your pets can come too: www.free-camping-australia.com (http://www.free-camping-australia.com)
Camping Guide to Tasmania: Boiling Billy Publications: www.boilingbilly.com.au (http://www.boilingbilly.com.au)
The highlights for us were Strahan, Sundown Point on the west coast and Brady's Lake east of Queenstown

plenty of places to stay around the state just way to many to list, those two book are very good the tassie 4wd book will give you other places to go and stay. or just give me a pm and could give you the heads up on a few places to stay. have a nice place out on the farm if you want a day out of touch, fishing or to go up Ben lomand.
Cheers Tim

thanks - we are getting together a good book list - have been to Tassie last year and did the east coast very quickly, looking forward to having more time this time around - what we saw got us really wanting to get back as soon as we could. last trip was a quick one to pick up a vehicle

Highlights for us were Montezuma Falls (& the tracks in and out), Whitetimbers/Jeffreys tracks (good driving), Ben Lomond National Park and Jacobs Ladder.
You might find travelling with a puppy difficult though. Lots of places you wont be able to go cause they are national parks.

I know what you mean. I have been there twice and still want to go back for more. Some really nice places in Tassie. That said there is some really scary places too... Some of the remote towns in the hills really can be from Deliverance....

If you have the time a trip in the car ferry to Bruny Island, not far from Hobart, would be recommended

I have often heard Queenstown referred to as the ***hole of the earth. And after being there am very inclined to agree ;)

The trip down the west coast from Merriwah to Strahan was great.
The ferryman over the Pieman river engaged us on the brief journey, looked at the white powder on the Fender and said..."youve come down from The Arthur"
We took an early chartered Cessna flight from Hobart to the South West landing on the quartzite airstrip at Melaleuca near Bathurst Harbour via Bruny and the amazing south coast and returning over the Arthurs. Not a cheap exercise but it would have been a 5 day walk otherwise and my walking stick wasn't up to it. You should read "King of the Wilderness" about Denny King who mined for tin there in the middle of last century.

We pulled into Queenstown to get some provisions and ran into 3 convoyed Defenders on their way out to gather mud. Much waving.
A bloke walked out of a shop looked at me and said to his lady friend:
"They're everywhere"

We camped at Ocean Beach (near Strahan) with our two kids and 18 foot van. The bonus it was free, great sunsets and all the mutton birds came in at sunset (9:30pm summer time !) and played around in their burrows. Very cool!
