View Full Version : Rage against the machine

So Ive been spending a few weeks enjoying driving a car instead of a lumbering 4WD. Its nice to have outrageous power and handling and enjoying it in the twisties.

Or is it?

In the car leaving work on Friday.... waiting in a que to turn right across the main drag in town. The car behind is beeping and the driver is carrying on like a manic - no idea why. When I get to the front he comes up on my LHS and I hear him begin to yell something as I take off through a gap in the traffic.

Driving to Wollongong yesterday... driving between Orange and Bathurst I was following a P plater who had just overtaken in an overtaking lane and then pulled into the LH lane. I continued in the RH lane as there was another pass coming up. As I was passing the P plater and the car infront of it (ie my bonnet was beside the P-plater) the P-plater pulls out on my forcing me into the oncoming traffic. I'm not sure how she didn't notice me as my horn was blaring with my bonnet level with her rear vision mirror an me now on the wrong side of the road! Thankfully no oncoming traffic! She continues out into my lane and passes like nothing had happened - not making any efforts that indicated that she noticed me. All accidental and ignorant so I press on and get the hell away from her.

Next was coming up behind someone driving slowly sheparding another car while blocking the overtaking lane up Mt Victoria. He eventually moves forward and as I go to pass though he accellerates. I wont say what speed we were doing at the top and through the corners to keep the high horse brigade happy, but for a significant portion of the trip over the mountains he continues to block my passing by doing everything he has to, but by only just enough so that I couldnt pass, but lets every other car through. When I saw the challenge I simply squeezed him out as he let the car infront through by jumping up and sticking my bonnet on the car in fronts bumper - but when he realised what I was doing he absolutely booted his car from behind me up to beside me to squeeze me out as his lane finished and then when he dropped in behind again gives me the finger! Strangely after his failed efforts to keep me behind he then straight away dropped back to never be seen again.

Sadly yesterday I also passed a freshly burnt out Lancia and a BMW X5.

Coming from Wollongong up to Sydney in the afternoon I then see a car cut across in front of a learner from the left lane into a turn right lane. The learner in front of me stops the car and starts going absolutely off his brain at this car that just cut him off! I couldn't believe it, but at the same time couldn't stop laughing - sure the car that had cut across had done the wrong thing, but hide of a learner (or anybody) to stop and hurl abuse - where the hell had he learnt that!

While I was in Sydney I changed back into my Disco..... and from there for the return trip to Orange last night there was........... the usual nothing once more. The cars are really nice and easy to drive - but I think I'll stick to 4WD's.

It made me realise why car drivers hate 4WD's. Its roots are probably somewhere in not being able to bully them and that must surely do the heads in for those road ragers, muscle flexers and Alpha personalities.

Sounds like you had a good few days there!

A couple of days ago there was a little sitting in the righthand lane on the SE Freeway as I was driving towards Adelaide to go to work.

The "driver" (more like steering wheel attendant) seemed to be completely unaware of the long line of traffic banked up behind her.

I am not sure why that would be the case, because as I overtook in the lefthand lane I saw the advertising stickers all over her car.

Tarot Reading, Horoscopes, Fortune Telling, etc.

Surely she should have known a few days prior about the trouble she would cause!

My work car is a Prius and from what I can tell the wee hybrid beastie can inflame road rage in the average suburban nutbag like no other vehicle, one slim, agitated gent actually rammed me the other day while frothing at the mouth and gesticulating with both hands.
This sort of thing never seems to happen in a Landy, even the Freelander aroused no bile in the short fuse brigade.

i HAVE DRIVEN 1/2 AROUND THIS PLANET

And I would say that Adelaide drivers are close to being the worse in the world!!!!

Truck drivers excluded, the bigger the truck the better the driver, they do what they can within road and vehicle limits. that’s based on my experience.

There is no respect for other drivers, maybe because of the restrictive gun licences where road rage usually means you get shot so there is no road rage.

But next to no one in this town can accelerate into a merging lane ( they stop!!) and if you do get yourself up to speed, everyone is tailgating and no one will let you in ( unlike a zip)

I had one P plater nutting of at me, he was speeding on the left hand lane and didn’t like that when I changed form the right hand ( car tuning right ahead) to the left that he had to slow down ( even I was above legal). He drove around me and was held up in front by a red light. he jumped out and decided to give me an earful. I responded by getting at to go toe to toe ( language in front of the misses and kid) and he run off still yelling abuse. The lights turned green and he’s still running down the road. cop on a bike tuned up so I gave him my card and left ( with his permission), got a call a few days latter from the cop saying not to worry about any thing because they had been looking for that kid anyway ( driving offences)
Now that may be the exception, but many other drivers are just as bad around here.

Rant over

You think that is a problem? :)

Try facing two semi trailers coming over the crest of a hill side by side on a dirt road in a narrow cutting when you are on a motor bike.

That happened to me near Dorrigo quite a few years ago.

Trying to ride in the gutter with my handlebars almost scraping the sides of the cutting was not my idea of a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. :p

That was the problem one was only about 1/2kph faster than the other. As I said I understand why, do you back off, drop a gear, or just pull alongside the other for a while.

Some get their ambitions mixed up with their horse power. If you think about it most cases you come up behind a slower truck an have to wait till all the cars pass then you move out an build up speed it don't happen quick with a loaded truck, And yes i even drop a few gears to stay behind a loaded one till get to duel lanes.

Well.... Slunnie, sounds like a fun drive!!

Emma and Myself did a quick run to Adelaide Sat, returned today for my old mans 60th...

Trip down was the usual easy run, till the roadworks at South Rd and Anzac Highway area.. They're building an underpass...

Anyway, cruising down the left lane and a sign says "Right lane closed - Merge Left"

We keep going, vehicles merging as we get towards the blocking signs etc...

40km/h, then 25km/h zone...

Vehicle in front gets one of those "I'll race up to the very end and push in" drivers shove in front of him causing him to brake hard.

Then I get the same... I let him in...

And at 20km/h (Me) I see a black VW Golf come flying through the 40 zone on my right, indicator on and just turn into my lane...

PITY, I was occupying the spot she wanted to be in!!!! :o

Was a great way to arrive in the city!!!

Her excuse... "I waved, didnt you see me?"

After I finished laughing I think I upset her more....
"That'll cost you a bit"

She fumed, when I showed her the front of mine and commented "That'll buff right out!"

You have no idea how GOOD it felt....

I've often wanted to have an old bomb and just NOT avoid accidents like that to teach them a lesson...

In this case I was lucky and the Barwork took the hit in its stride...

Made me smile...

I did point out too, that maybe she should revise her thinking and that it was lucky that the baby seat in the LHR was unoccupied... Her driving *could* have much dire consequences.

Tombie, it's very interesting point you brought up , while back I had a guy trying to race me to the end of a Merging lane with his Kids in the back seat and wife in the front, and at the end where the two lanes merged I back off and let him thru and then there was a bit of finger saluting and some hand gestures going on :D.

Edit: and exactly the same thoughts going thru my mind that perhaps may be he should have revised his Driving style. specially with his Family inside the car.

Those last couple of drivers seem to fit perfectly a description I once heard that I think is pretty close to the mark for a lot of people.

It described them as drivers for whom arriving safely at their destination was of less importance than demonstrating their superiority over every other driver on their way there.

Unfortunately there are a lot of them about.

I had a couple of magic moments driving up to Maitland to pick up a gearbox today.

Merge lane, on the highway I always merge as soon as it is indicated, not when the lane runs out - sorry for those it ****es off, but I've got a problem with people trying to fight it right down to the last.

Came back to bite me today, merged early, everything looking good, except for the idiot in front who decided that they weren't really ready to merge, then they were, then they weren't, so I end up standing on the brakes, cos there is nowhere else to go.

Number two was a Patrol with a huge van behind, a large aluminium tinny on the roof, the back wheels riding just off the guards, and the front wheels almost floating.

Ran away quick from that one.

Oh if only that was the only trailer disaster for the day, some people shouldn't drive with a trailer.

Ah - so you're the one in Freo that drives that Prius. :o:o

Know what you mean mate - my work car in Freo is an Astra. Can't wait to be back in the Disco on the weekends.

Plus the fact that I'm in Kalgoorlie on the weekends also helps (though there are some pretty ordinary drivers up there too).

Elsewhere in this post, there are comments about Adelaide and Cairns drivers. I dunno - I've driven in Adelaide a lot over the years, and was working in Cairns for a little while last year. Still reckon the drivers in both those places are tame compared to Perth. On average, the worst drivers I've ever coma across would have to be Perth drivers (especially when they venture outside the city on weekends / holidays).

There are problem drivers all over the place, and no doubt I am one (at least to someone at sometime).

Last night I came off the M7 onto the M5 heading into Liverpool merged at around 95kph behind 2 B-doubles they came through just ahead of me at (estimated) 110kph and no more than 5 metres between them, changed lanes as one, it was as if they were joined.

Bloody dangerous in my opinion.

Had the opposite today. I stayed behind a couple of caravans at overtaking points so people would pass and the wouldn't overtake me!
We were doing 70 at one point on the freeway and cars would still take ages before they would pull out and go past!
At least the truckies realised what I was doing and would take the opertunity I was giving them and even accnowledged it.

Port Lincoln to Whyalla, is a bit of a pain, not many passing lanes and an undulating road with not much forward vision. Add to that quite a few Caravans. By the time the caravan moves over ( you cant plan for this because you cant see around it) get into the correct gear spool up etc the opportunity has passed.

Turckie can see more therefore thay can plan a bit better

Having said that None did pull over. But then I am driving the only diesel that I have ever driven that will wined its self off the clock

I was coming up the hume from vic about a year ago, and there was this old BMW 3 series that didnt want me to pass. He wasnt doing anything dangerous, as it was dual carridge way. I had the cruise control set at 113 (110 zone), every time i merged right to overtake him, he floored it until he was about 100m ahead, then backed off again, to about 105-110. This happened for about 20kms, and, although i did not care much, i was having a laugh at what a tool he looked like not wanting me to pass.
Anyway, on the final time, as i got along side him, he floored it, and promptly threw a rod out the side, because there was this very loud banging noise, and the hume was one big blue smoke screen and oil slick. I gave him a "beep beep" and a big landy wave as he pulled into the brake down lane.

It was the funniest thing i had ever seen whilst driving.

if my wife and I do a car swap and I have to drive the VW Polo, I am routinely stunned by the attitudes and aggression of other drivers. It's like you aren't even there.

If they can cut you off, push in or block your merge they will. It makes me fantasise about LA Story where they all shoot at each other in the traffic!

well I'm terrible and I admit it......if people are coming down a known merge lane and indicate well in advance of driving down I let them in no questions asked....

If I watch people pull into that lane put there foot down and then get right to the end and I mean right to the end to come in I block them....hate cue jumpers that slow down traffic for there own selfishness.....I had one guy do it to me and never even indicated to come in after rushing past about 30 cars he just drifted over as he deemed it his right to come accross.......

I didn't move and when he got close enough I beeped the horn....he **** himself slammed on the brakes as he realised I wasn't going to move, then of course NO ONE ELSE would let him in the 30 cars he screamed past a good 18 of them got back in front of him.:)

I dont mind people coming down a merge lane as long as they are trying to merge in and not just trying to get ahead of everyone....I use my mirrors a lot when on the road shame these people dont when they just move over

Oooh! I wrote this post to another forum in December, when I was still learning to drive. This is a direct copy and paste. But when I say icy in it, the road quite literally was dotted with patches of snow and black ice!

Last night, everything was going for a slow day. Off on a trip to the physios, about 6pm. Was dark, icy and there I am in a landrover defender with L plates on! None of those conditions are known for going very fast, especially the deepender!

Well we were coming along a reasonably narrow road, very windy, and an old Ford Mondeo came up behind me, beeping, flashing headlights etc etc (I was going at 30mph and its a 40mph limit). I slowed down on a straight and he went roaring past at a reasonably high speed. Came to a corner, which I know quite well, that leads onto a reasonably steep hill. I went around it, and there, facing me, is the mondeo, backwards to what he should of been.

Thats right, he'd spun out on the corner! So I waited while he was doing his 3(read 20) point turn and watched him fail miserably at getting up the hill due to a lack of momemtum. I got out, went up, and asked him if he'd like a tow...

Fast forward a few minutes and we're nearing the top of the hill when I hear a revving from behind me, looked in the mirror, his indicators on, and bang! The barsteward had tried to overtake, still attached to the tow rope, bent my rear bolt holding JATE ring, nearly made me spin out and nearly tore out his towing point on his car (note to self: JATE rings and off-road towing straps are NOT to be messed with)

Well we got out, and I got £15 off him to replace my JATE ring and carried on my merry way, while he lamented the damage to his own tow ring and bumper. Several minutes later, honk honk, flashing lights. He's behind me again.

The rear fog lights made him keep his distance...

My last batch of road rage happened about 12 months ago.

Sitting at road works in the left lane (after merging) I noticed a Patrol pull out of the left lane down the right lane that finished beside my car. He nudged his front wheels past my bonnet and proceeded to change lanes. I was fuming so I stood my ground, anyhow 35inch tyres rubbing against the door on my new Falcon with only 47kms on the clock forced me to stop as he was not stopping.

We stopped at the lights and he got out and gave me a mouthful, I called him a typical 4x4 bully. Still really peeved, light goes green but due to traffic we still don't get through lights. But as light goes orange he went to go then stopped (he would have been stuck in the intersection) I saw his car move and as I wanted to give him some sign language I nailed it. Then realised he wasn't moving Crunch front bumper into dirty big caravan towing hitch. (brake lights on bumper hidden by my tailgating bonnet)

The road crew went quiet, my head is slumped on the steering wheel, and he get out. Are you f#$k@#g stupid he said.
I look up and sheepishly say that was an accident, he looked at me and we both started laughing.

Now I don't care, I try to read the other drivers and act before they stuff my day.

Yesterday though I did have a rental truck for the day and whilst coming down Smith street I moved over for merging traffic (cement truck) and got an acknowledgement from the driver. I would do the same in my Falcon or Landie but maybe it is a hight thing or was it because I was driving a truck?

I have tried tailgating tailgater's and chicken out. It is too hard to drive like this.

I prefer to run 5-10kmh over the limit but don't get upset if I can't achieve this.

The things that peeve me on the M1 are people that run in the third lane when the other two left lanes are empty or the overtaking lane when not overtaking. AND PEOPLE THAT LITTER.

In my limited Behind the wheel experience yet considerable behind he who is behind the wheel experience, Orange drivers are some of the most appalling drivers ever. You'd think driving a shiny blue disco 2, you'd be kind of noticeable..... Not even halfway through a roundabout and some grey haired lady cuts infront of me in a WRX like she's a coppa trying to stop a speeding crook! Ended up having to drive ON TOP OF the roundabout to avoid smashing her drivers side in. Being the first week of driving my disco, it didn't occur to me that i had my horn linked to buttons as i pounded the centre of my steering wheel in rage! :p :wasntme:
Shocking driving seems to be all too common in the central west, and seeing as i drive 400kms a week on average, you see a fair bit!

I was traveling back from Albany to Perth in the D3 with the kids in the back and a rover v8 in the boot, cruise set at 100kph about 9pm. I see headlights approaching from behind, getting closer pretty quick. Then they are gone..... Where? He was so close behind me I couldn't see his headlights in any mirror!

So the fog lights went on. No reaction. I sped up to about 130kph then settled at 110kph (posted limit). Within seconds he's back on my bumper again. Passed through two long straights and he never passed, the second one at 90kph to give him a hint.

Eventually he pulled out and passed, must have had it way over 150kph as he did.

I rounded the next corner to see the red and blues flashing away and the same **** pulled over by WA's finest ;).

Thought about stopping and dropping the **** in it but thought better. Spent the remainder of the drive back to Perth expecting the knob to cruise up behind me again but didn't.

Reading back through this thread I'm almost shocked that there's been no mention of Melbourne drivers...!
Most of the time everyone seems fairly mild mannered (certainly compared to my recollections of Sydney driving, but that's nearly 10 years ago now...), that is until they get on the Westgate/Princes Freeway!

I have the pleasure of driving this road down to Geelong every day and the number of nutbags with any one, or all, of: no peripheral vision, no concept of lane discipline, no anticipation (oh look, there's a car/truck/bus trying to merge in from the left and the lane to my right is empty, I could move to the right and let them merge in easily, but no, f*ck 'em, I'm just gonna keep on driving... I was here first...!), or the "I'm gonna do 99kph in the right hand lane and youse can all just move around me", all makes you wonder who/how/what these people were taught when they learnt to drive???

i HAVE DRIVEN 1/2 AROUND THIS PLANET

And I would say that Adelaide drivers are close to being the worse in the world!!!!.........
next to no one in this town can accelerate into a merging lane ( they stop!!)

Had to laugh at this though, having driven in/through/out of Adelaide only a few times, this cracks me up every time I see it. I keep wanting to imagine them all as stoned hippies "woah man, the lane's ended, far out, what are we gonna do now...?"

Shes on P plates and out to get driving experience, give her some.

brakes on, counter the wobble, balance up on the throttle, sling it left into the back end on the bounce for a left front to right rear shunt as she merrily pirouettes around the front of your car continue to brake and pull over onto the left hand side of the road so you can get her insurance details.

The accident report reads
"whilst overtaking car y car y pulled out of the lane and struck my vehicle, whilst attempting to regain control of my vehicle I collided with the back quater of her vehicle"

Bet she remembers to check the right mirror and blindspots EVERY time after that.

Being the first week of driving my disco, it didn't occur to me that i had my horn linked to buttons as i pounded the centre of my steering wheel in rage!

Yeah, I know how you blokes feel. Getting sick of all these pensioners from Eventide thrashing their electric carts along beaconsfield terrace, really have to gun the Landy to pass them. When I do, the bolshie old farts give a cheeky wave. Too much of this going on at Sandgate, might have to move to Shorncliffe, much quieter there. Bob

Young women and "small-car syndrome" a new road pest | Adelaide Now (http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/young-women-and-small-car-syndrome-a-new-road-pest/story-e6frea6u-1226307663354)

YOUNG women are the drivers most likely to have aggressive "small-car syndrome", a survey shows.

Insurer AAMI has found women aged 18 to 24 who drive small two-door cars are more likely than other drivers to display aggressive and reckless tactics on the road.

SWMBO was telling me a about an incident yesterday where a young Asian female driving a small two door Audi decided to suddenly lurch to the right, across two lanes and into her lane, then when seeing the front passenger door of a Disco 2 right outside her driver's window, she swerved back into the lane immediately to SWMBO's left. Almost under the wheels of the truck she had tried to accelerate in front of (and in her attempt to jump across three lanes).

Not at all! :P He used to teach at my school! In all honesty, i was looking through his threads to find the one about his D2, to see what kind of lights he had and i saw a threat titled "rage against the machine"...seeing as Bulls on Parade is one of my favourite songs it intrigued me. At least thats the story im sticking to!
On a serious note, I really must apologize to slunnie. I have pestered him with questions since i started looking for a disco, ended up buying one pretty much the same colour as him, even the number plates have the same structure
Slunnie- I can tell you honestly i am not stalking you, however it may appear this way! :D

BTW, I still teach at my school! :p

The lights are IPF 800's from ARB, both spot lights and the headlights are 90/100w with a Traxide headlight loom to cope with the current. The bullbar blinkers are 5 or 10w bulbs so the trailer light doesn't trigger on the dash and the rest are standard.

Yeah i was referring to the spotties :D Looking at the rectangular lights, as i think they look better on the front of the vehicle than the round ones.
Getting my ARB bar sorted out on monday, and convinced mum to let my get the UHF and lights sorted while im at it. Currently fabricating some brackets for the dash so that i can have the UHF there when i need it, and just unclip the brackets and take it off during day to day driving. Ill put some pics up when its sorted!

Once again, cheers slunnie and the rest of you!
Cheers
