td5 gettin' hot

,been travelling for a bit, and now have em2 instaled and have been watching temps a little closer. towing a small caravan 1.8t approx. going up long inclines the water temp according to nanocom goes up to about 98 sometimes 99. the em2 has gone over 100 on occasion and once yesterday to 102, although nanocom showed water temp still at 98. the em2 is fixed onto front bolt going down into the rocker cover. maybe hot air off radiator blowing over it?? do i need to worry ?
I have been driving for about 2 weeks since last under bonnet check but after yesterdays temps i had a look and still got plenty of coolant in reservoir so not down there. anyone got any info for me ?

My theory is based on the question: "what were the temps prior to you having the facilities to read them?"

Let me explain - Assuming that everything has remained the same, coolant levels, air temp, transmission oil etc, and the ONLY difference is the addition of a gauge to read the temps, then I wouldn't be worried.

I think a lot of anguish is caused when people can suddenly see things like temps or oil pressure rising, especially when towing or going up an incline. The fact of the matter is, they probably did it before, but you just didn't know.

IMHO, a set of readings need to be done to establish what is "normal". When the temps or pressures go outside this normal range by X percentage, then it is cause for concern.

So, that said, what you have now is a set of base numbers. If you are towing a heavier load, or up a steeper & longer incline, the base numbers will change. This is where the deviation by X percentage needs to come in.

Now, I haven't answered your question, but I have had a rant & feel a little better now. :D

The elctric fans are supposed to turn-on at 105 deg and reduced-power mode starts at 121 deg (then stops at 118 deg), so there's plenty of room to get warmer without any problems.

Are you talking about the Madmans EMS2 monitoring system, AND IS THIS COOLENT TEMPS, cause if you are then you have the sender in the wrong spot, it should be a special bracket that is bolted to the side of the head and the VDO sender it in that, and it IS right next the the factory temp sender, that the the top radiator hose attaches too.

I have the EMS1 in my TD5 and the highest temp so far has been 92 deg on a very hot day.

pet hate......

look at the temp gauge on the dash has it moved past its normal point...

if not your not heating it up yet.

get concerned at about 110-115ish ease off the noise

take more agressive action if it still climbs to 120+

To me if it is climbing that fast, then I would say it's the beginning of something wrong, my TD5 hasn't gone past 92/93 even when towing, I always check now, EGTs, coolent temp, then gearbox temp, when climbing long steep hills.

All this is irelavent if those temps are not coolent though and as Basil said if you didn't know what they were before:angel:

heh, god comments ppl. i didnt have an accurate guage before and have heard the dash guage is useless, thats why i got the tm2, and thats why i have asked the question. thx blknight, thats the figures i needed. now i feel at ease.

I have had 105max on hot days(40+) towing a heavy trailer up long hills at 100ks.Quickly drops to 90-95 once the hills are climbed.Good to know the ECU overheat/booster fan temp values.

Mine happily runs up to 102c in the heat...

48c outside, was cruising around 98c till it met hills... then up to 102c

Trailing throttle drops the temp to 92c or there abouts on hot days.
