How long to replace head gasket on a td5

I have been quoted 16 hours labour to replace a head gasket on 2001 discovery Td5 does that seem right ???

What exactly does it include in the 16 hours. Is it just a straight swap or are they stripping and skimming the head etc?

Hi Vince,
Last one we did took us 12, drive in drive out. I can see 16 though if other things were attended to, or the head machining etc was done in house. We sublet ours but I can see a few hours at least going into hardness testing, pressure testing and machining/ cleaning, checking, assembly etc etc.

Its just a straight swap ... maybe also a new water pump and pressure test..
Whats annoying the car had a top engine overhaul at 140k which included a head service new head gasket etc that was $6500. Now it looks like it needs a new head at 195k ... The car has a probe fitted in the water coolant that goes off when car loses water pressure .. It only went off once before it was serviced and was filled straight away with new coolant when it did... So cannot see how it could have cracked the head. For the time being the service center has used a block sealer called kammie weld or something sounding like that to see if that can solve it temporarily ... Also I have noticed now in the coolant there is large lump of sludge around the probe in the coolant compartment.

Hopefully I get my joyous disco healthy again soon !!!!

16 hours is possible with a new head, as that will have to be built up and so on, so its more work than remove/gasket/refit.

You dont feel brave enough to try it yourself? Its not that hard.

Maybe you should look at getting a coolent temp and EGT monitor, if the EGTs are high it can contribute to the head cracking.
