After a trip on the dunes last sunday it seems my Discovery has decided it break a few things. Had a faulty shock come of its weld so replaced that today and im missing a rubber out of my rear sway bar. But worst of all my rear drive shaft is very cloes to packing up and calling it quiets, after noticing new vibrations through the car and an un goldley rattle comming from the rear under acceleration i had a look at the shaft and where it joins the Diff the bolt heads are stripped and there it wireing coming out of the joint.
I was just wondering if any of you guys have had any problems with drive shafts are fitting a 2" Lift to a series one discovery. I dont in any means drive it hard! i am pretty sure it is just an age thing as she has done 320,000K
What price would i be looking at for a replacement?
Oh and the boot now doesn't open, i think as a punishment i will go 4x4ing in my mates 80 this weekend and leave the Landy at home...but i think im punishing myself

I was just wondering if any of you guys have had any problems with drive shafts are fitting a 2" Lift to a series one discovery. Do you have a universal at the rear of the propshaft or the rubber coupling?
The rubber coupling doesn't like lifts all that much.
If so, replace the coupling to get you mobile again (about $100 for the part) then look around for an earlier propshaft & change your diff flange over the suit.

It's a pretty serious vibration under acceleration when that donut is rooted isn't it :D
Instead of replacing the donut have a quick search around for the 4 bolt driveshaft and flange parts as the donut is $100+
If you can't find the parts straight up then a new donut will see you through another 12 months or so.
When mine went it still looked okay but you could see the bolt heads had been touching (shiny surfaces) under load. It must be an absolute shocker when they are actually wearing the bolt heads away!

Cheers guys!
And yes the vibration is VERY bad i had to limp home from Anna Bay to newcastle like that. The front one seems to be ok. So i need the new bolts and nuts which is $8 and what are the correct terms for the other parts i should be chasing?
Sorry im not too good with this particular issue :(

mine is a three bolt should i get the same again? or is the four bolt better suited to a lift?

4 bolt for a lifted car. Otherwise the donut is just flexing constantly & it'll happen again.
There should be some conversion info in the Good Oil section.

OK so i now see what needs doing if im correct the three bolt shaft has a rubber donut where as the four bolt does not.
I have been quoted $220 for the second hand shaft and $88 for the flange parts.
Does this sound like a reasonable price? or should i have a look around else where?
James. :)

The shaft is a bit exxy. PM Lokka (at Stockton) - he might have a cheaper one for you.

Would you say the flange is well priced?

I paid $50 for my shaft but the sliding splines are a bit worn.
You can get new ones. I can't remember what I was quoted exactly but I think $400ish.
If you find one with a good spline but flogged UJs the UJs are only $20 each to buy.
There are two types of flanges too. One needs a spacer and the other has the spacer built in. You will also need to move your mud shield over from your old flange.

Would you say the flange is well priced? It sounds OK if it's a new one but, as said, you might need the spacer too.
In the link I posted earlier, it mentions a kit that has everything you need (except the propshaft).

Ok So latest quote for the shaft is now $275 (they decided they wanted more money) and $88 for the flange.
Iv sent LOKKA a PM just waiting on a reply. Once get this sorted maybe the disco will work with no worries again. :(

I have an 84 Range Rover 3.5 Just wondering if they have the four bolt set up? if so would i be able to remover the shaft and flange from the RR and put it on the Disco?
I asking this via post insteas of going down to check my self as it is sitting in another part of our property in long grass whilst i am sitting here all clean and ready to go out :D
Cheers.

I had this happen to me on my D1. If you take your shaft to a driveshaft specialist, they should be able to cut off the old yoke and weld on a new one to take a UJ. That way you just need the flange to match for the diff end; should be around $40 from memory....I had this done and it cost about $100 at the driveshaft bloke, plus UJ if you haven't got one (I already had a UJ to give him.....).

You can use the propshaft but the flange splines are different so that's a no go.

Cheers guys! once i got my head around what i needed the process was much easier.
I was first quoted $275 for the shaft from ALL4x4 (but they always charge ungodly prices!) so i called around and LOKKA has quoted me $130-$150 which sounds much better to me!
As for the flange kit ALL4X4 have quoted me $88 and Karcraft in Sydney have quoted me 116.82+11.80= more then ALL4x4 :o
So i will get the shaft and new unis for $130-150 and the flange kit for $88
(might be able to get the kit cheaper again as i know some people so ill give that a crack as well)
Does this all sound reasonable to you guys?
James.

How much would i be looking at for brand brand new shaft and flange kit?
As the old man has jumped up and down insisting second hand is not the way too go.
So how much would it cost for the same parts new and how for the people who have gone second hand have you had any worries? since fitting them?
Cheers, James.

From a dealer:
New propshaft $804.10
Flange kit: $232.34
Now does your Dad want to help with costs?

I told him i am willing to buy new if he pays the difference. But even if a second hand one does go i would be able to replace it about 5 times before i would be paying more. And from what i can gather you guys dont have any troubles with second hand ones? i guess it would depend on what kind of life it has had.

Just go for 2nd hand. If the splines in the prop are OK, then the worst it will need is universal joints. Everything else is non-wearing.
Even the flange can be repaired with a speedi-sleeve & you'll fit a new seal while it's apart anyway (won't you?).

Seals are only $10 aren't they ;) and I'm guessing it would be a wise choice but not necessary to do this?

I'd go for the 'wise choice' option seeing as it'll be easily accessible.

Shaft from LOKKA flange kit from ALL4X4 and im guessing they would sell the seals as well ;) for around $10
And then wait till the 7th for LOKKA to come fit it for me :) so no Land Rover for me for another week :(
