Hi

I need to replace the Wabco brake vaccum pump and what I would like to know is the following:

1. Is it necessary to remove the radiator fan to loosen the serpentine belt tensioner?
2. What is the correct method of loosening and tightening the belt tensioner?
3. Are any special tools required to accomplish the task?
4. Does anybody have a pictorial procedure to repair the vacuum pump from a repair manual?

Just wondering why this would not be covered under warranty - It's a common failure point and Land Rover should cover this without issue? I doubt anyone would have done this them selves yet.

Your best bet might be to subscribe to the Land Rover GTR site - and look it up in the online repair manual.

Please give us detail on your vac pump failure. Slow leak or quick. Vehicle age etc. I have recently had a replacement under warranty on 2008 model and was told that an updated pump design with dual seal was used. Some doubts on the forum at this stage whether this design is any better!

Yes why are you doing this yourself?

Are you to far away from a land rover service center?

Everyone that has had it changed has so under warranty

I did it myself because I am based in Soyo, Angola (Noth Western tip of Angola - Congo River Mouth). Here mobility and not warranties are the order of the day. The nearest agent is 500KM away in Luanda. The journey to Luanda takes 12 hours on a seriously bad road. I have not done it myself as I am still new in the area. Also the last time one of the vehicles was sent to Luanda it stood at the agent for two months.:mad: It is far better to be self sufficient in this part of the world.

Thanks very much for the useful info. It turns out that it is not necessary to remove the radiator fan. The serpentine belt can be loosened by turning the belt tensioner clockwise from underneath the vehicle. This does however require two people - one to rotate the tensioner and one to slip the belt off the vacuum pump.

Hi Craig, thanks for the update. Its good to know the fan doesn't have to be removed to remove the belt, less special tools to worry about!
You may want to check a few other things, these have been pretty common with the Puma:

Hydraulic hose on the bottom of the PAS pump for tightness
Propshaft nuts
Swaybar connections
Turbo heat sheild bolts, (more of an annoyance)

I can't seem to rotate the tensioner clockwise. I've loosened the tension bolt, got underneath and hooked the socket bit into the tensioner groover on its face and pulled down to turn clockwise but it doesn't move. Do I need more muscle juice?!
