Good Afternoon All,
I am looking at trying to stop the "permissable seepage" that is coming out from my sump pan under the 130 defender. (Wife is getting annoyed at tthe black dots on the new concrete.) I have just been told that there is no sump gasket at all and you just use some sealant of some sort and tighten it back up. Do any of you have any sure fire drip stop sealant/gasket goo recommendations? I would really like to try and clean up the drips permanently if possible.
Also I would like to know if anyone can recomend an alternator upgrade for the Tdi300? I was recommended a Discovery alternator by a fellow AULRO member as its a straight bolt on apparently and may yet go down that track but has anyone else used a different make or brand such as Bosch. I would like to install a Tacho off the alterntor as well. Any ideas/opionions/observations will be greatly appreciated.
cheers
Dave

RTV silicon is the factory sealant.
When you drop the sump it is difficult to get the surface totally oil free thanks to oil continuing to weep from up high.

Karcraft do have a sump gasket available, and i believe a number of workshops, at least around Sydney use it.

The Disco 100 amp alternator is the easiest upgrade available, although there is a Transit and Mondeo ones that fit, they aren't common.
AFAIK all the Oz Bosch ones have the wrong mounting, spacings, etc. at least as far as I've seen looking through catalogues.

Do a search, both subjects have been well discussed in the past, including aftermarket part numbers.
Disco Tdi 100amp alteranators (aftermarket).
OEX pt. # is MXA 831.
The Transit one is MXA 828 (this may or may not fit, I've never sighted it).
Baxters list theirs as pt. # 63321347

You can run a tach straight off the 'W' terminal on the back of both the Defender and Disco alternators.
Also remember that the Defender rear alternator bearing needs periodic servicing if it is to survive. It's a small Ina needle roller that runs on a hardened sleeve pressed onto the shaft and isn't sealed.
Around every 60,000km i pop the back off the alternator, clean it out and re-grease.

Mate, you are a font of knowledge and i thank you for sharing it with me. I will definately order a gasket before i drop the sump and will delve around the old posts again(I must not be very good at it) for more on alternators. Thanks very much
cheers
