I have been out and about today looking at tyres for the D1
It has coped a 2" lift but still has only standard 16X7 steel wheels

I originally wanted 285 75 16 (33x12)

but after several tire shops said that they would not fit such a wide tire to a 7" rim, 12" being over there limit for a 7" rim, they all said 33x10.5 was a better fit (255 85 16 in metric)

http://www.simex4x4.com/html/s02_article/article_view.asp?id=106&nav_cat_id=127&nav_top_id=55&dsb=79 (http://www.simex4x4.com/html/s02_article/article_view.asp?id=106&nav_cat_id=127&nav_top_id=55&dsb=79)

Jungle Tracker 2 by Simex was recommended by a shop I trust 33x10.5

The other option is to go down a size to 32x10.5 in the centipede

Does anybody have any experience with these tires or any other ideas?

Thanks

There are plenty of people running 285/75 on a 16x7 rim so you will be able to find someone that is willing, but yes it is under the min width set by most tyre manufacturers. Also the 285 is not 12 wide, closer to 11 from memory.
I had a set of 32x9.5 Simex on 15x7 rims, measured almost as tall as my 285 BFGs but not as wide. Simex in a 32 or 33 will measure taller then marked, and the wider the simex tyre the taller also (from my experience).
255/85 is a pretty good size, taller then the 285 but not as wide. Nath's set of 255/85 Maxxis tyres measured almost as tall as Justin's 35inch Creepies :D
Anyway, enough from me

If they're telling you that then they're talking out there arse and don't know what they're talking about (obviously just going by 'what the book' tells them ).

I ran my 285/75R16 Silverstones on std offset 16x7 steel Disco rims which you have fitted to yourt Disco. IICR the Disco steel rims are actually a bit wider than 7 inches (about 7 1/4 inches) from what I have been told/read over the years, I run the Dynamica rims which are 16x8 mainly for a bit more offest. Rims are @$120 each.

Footnote on what Philippe has mentioned, 99% of tyres that state they're 33 inches are more likely to be 32.5-7 inches in diamiter pending on the manufacturer. My Mt117 Sports are ther tallest 285/75 size I've had at around 33.1 inches :)

If i was buying tyres (without looking to see what else is around) i would probably get:
Maxxis Bighorn (I think ) - Mud / Everyday Tyre
Silverstone Sport - Bit more agressive not driven everyday but driving on them to 4wd
Silverstone Extreme - Weekend only tyre
Not sure on the current price comparison between BFG and Maxxis but i dont know that the BFG would be worth any extra coin.

Those 2 Simexs are also a good fit on 7" rims, and the 32" ET is as big as the already oversized 33x10.5" JT2.

There is a difference between what will fit and what is legal.

About the only 285/75-16 tyres that are approved for a 7" rim are the Mickey Thompson MTZ's and the old MTX I think they were called - the ones that Roothy used to run on Milo.

The Simexs are a good fit onto 7" rims. The 32x10.5 ET is as big as the already oversized 33x10.5 JT2.

One other thing to consider is the noise from a centerpede or jungle trekkers... i've run 34" JT2's before and they were a great tyre but sounded like a twin prop plane even over the noise of the diesel

I agree. I tried it and lasted about 6 months.

If you are DDing it then I'd be looking for something like a mud radial. The MTZ seems on the surface to be a goos option for sizing, pattern and construction.

Look at the Federal Couragia MT's that Shepp is running on his D2, good tyre and cheap too for a weekend dunga. I almost bought a set but was lucky enough to score the Sports off grimace at the time. I would have bought the Silverstone sports again new but had none in QLD after ringing around half a dozen places (plus they're gone up at least $40 each since last bought a set) and didn't know how long til they would get some again .

I had to buy a spare from Hobzee 4X4 shop in Melbourne, was $285 a tyre plus freight (about $320 landed).

Thanks Josh and everybody else I appreciate your input
I actually like the noise of a twin prop plane
Noise is not really my issue; I am looking for off road claws but want to drive to Landcruiser Park without changing tires.

Not really concerned about mileage the D1 is mainly a "Club Car"

Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ ???
Jungle Trekkers

Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radials

Mickey claw radials seem to be great tyres.. or the JT2's... or krawlers if the budget will stretch (though not positive if come in 33")

I run the 285/75R16 Silverstone MT 117 Sports on my LR 7" rims all the time and they have performed flawlessly for me both on and off road. Wear rate is excellent, much better than the BFG muds I had on before, grip on rock is far superior than the BFG's and for the price at the time (paid $238 a tyre) I would buy them again for sure.
Best of luck, Mick

Mate I'm running Federal Couragias 285/75 on factory D2 alloys. First time I have tried this tyre and well worth the money performed well on and off road and at the time only paid $235 a tyre, but think they have gone up in price since then. They come out of the same factory as BFGs and Mickey Thompson tyres. Would definately get them again provided they dont go up too much more in price.

Now about $265 a tyre last time I priced them, still the cheapest decent branded 33 inch tyre on the market in a 16 inch.

15 inch sizes are cheaper than the $$$ to go and buy rims is it really worth it

I took the advise of our canny Scott friend, (Thanks Mick :BigThumb:) they are good value, and after watching Trav at Landcruser :TakeABow:.
I was still torn over whether to get the Radial Claws, the internet reviews of this tyre are great, but the price and Trav's performance on his won the day.
So Cheeky now sports 33x11 Silverstone MT-117 (285 75 16 in metric) :D

Good stuff Gaz. I hope you got them for a good price and compared to the radial claws they're a damn sight cheaper too. They're actually over 33 inches and nearly 12 inches widr, they're a big tyre for a 33.

Pretty tight fit there, but you're not running an offet rim like I am either so the guard chop isn't quite as severe

Noticed you junked the rear bumper too, all you need to do is slash the guard at the back like I've done and you'll be set :twisted::twisted:

Now just watch those axles go snap :wasntme:

Looking good Gary.....I agree though perhaps some spares might be an idea so that you are not stuck on the side of a hill for a few hours sorting your car out;) Nothing fun about that at all for you or the rest of the group;):D

Remember Harry, I have a 4 door Rangie and that's the same as a Disco so I feel your pain in that regard . If you **** it up it can be costlty, I have done this although my plastering skills came in handy in bogging up the over-cut door

It's not a hard job but a PIA with the inner skin having to be cut out as well. I've cut guards on 2 door Rangies, still the easiest to cut up IMO althopugh the alluminium panel is much thicker :D

Offset wheels are on the list.
Does anybody know the correct Backspace for a 16x8" wheel

Would 3 3/4" be around the money ??

The dynamica rims I have which are 16x8 have around a 30mm offset, plenty for the Sports to cope with (don't hit the radius arms on full lock and haven't adjusted them).

Rims are roughly $140 each new, not bad value for a 16 inch rim. If you like, you can have your Disco rims flipped to the offest of your choice for @$70 a rim.
