Various custom cars have explored this arrangement over the years both upwards,downwards and sideways.
The factory GM disappearing station wagon tailgate from the 70's used the same principle.
I remember working on a mid 70's Chev Impala (ex Hearse) that had it.
(PITA to fix the power window when it all failed one day!)
I wonder how the side doors would go in passing side impact regulations? This would possibly add extra weight and size??
Because people in the 21st century living in "civilized countries" can not be held responsible for their own actions, inhibitors would have to be installed to prevent vehicle being driven with doors open.

Sure as hell would fix all those parking issues in the shopping centre car park though ...... ;)

looks like it could be a stronger panel for side impact dependent upon how many bars they chuck in it but the A post that you have seperating front and rear does a pretty good job.

what if you park on unlevel ground?
how many paint jobs would insurance company allow a year ?
