Vehicle age as regards valuation

I was wondering about something. For valuation purposes, is it always the year of a vehicle’s manufacture that counts, or can it be the year of first registration?

For example a “2006” model is sold new and first registered (and this can be proven) in December 2007. (Up to that time, it hasn’t been driven, except for perhaps a few miles connected with delivery.) When determining its resale value, is that vehicle taken to be now just over two years old, or just over one year old.?

For resale or trade in the vehicle's age is taken from the compliance plate (ADR) date I.E. 1 1985 (Jan 1985) would make the vehicle an 85 model even if it was not sold or registered until March 1986

I would assume that the Insurance age would be the same.

Yep, agree with the above. You should have saved at the time of original purchase so lose at resale time.

Uncleho is right.Dealer would always take the earliest date anyway in order to lever the price down.

Yet dealers will often advertise "First registered year"

Pre-compliance plates it was easy to change a vehicles age by just changing a few minor trim details or by hoping t e client was not aware of the minor yearly changes, Series Landrovers were an easy one a Series 2 ran from 1958-1960, so it was sold as a 1960 model, the 2a ran from 61-69 without much change exept the wiper and eletrics, so it was advertised as a 1967,8,9 model, the Volkswagen Beetle year models were dated by the number of peaks onthe castle in the bonnet emblem, Holdens and other Aust cars by the Armourplate glass in the windows, where the . was was the year the glass was made count the dots x the number of windows and the average the dot location, when Compliance plates came in it gave the vehicle an identity, seating, weight, and the ADR which it was built under.
