Driving out of the city last friday my disco started to run out of power and showing a very distubing amount of black smoke, pulling up safely i tried to turn the motor off, this did not work for a while, even removing the ignition key failed to stop the moter reving to its max, finally after reinsertiin the key and the motor stopped after the smoke blocked out the city and the sun.
Verdict was the motor is full of diesel, failed injector and cracked head, melted no 1 and no2 pistons and other internal damage.
Guess you have heard this before and i am going to buy a new td5 motor.
Only 108,000 kms
There was no indication there was anything wrong with disco

Penno ;

That sounds like bad news , I'm no expert , but from what you described , it sounds to me you had a runaway Td5 motor.

Edit:

This can be caused by diesel fuel entering the engine oil via a leak in the fuel injector seals.

Also cracked piston, allowing oil to be scavenged.

It usually takes quite a while to fill the sump up with that much diesel though. Regular oil level checks usually reveal the problem long before the motor suicides :(.

Almost had the same issue in my 2003 TD5. 98k on the clock and 2 months out of warranty when I found the oil level was rising in the sump. Had the oil tested and found 5% diesel contamination.

Usually it is from diesel getting past the injector copper O-rings. In my case they were replaced but the contamination continued. Was advised on another forum at the time about the possibility of the motor running away on me so had the head pressure tested to find that there was a crack in one of the fuel galleries causng the contamination. Had no choice but to replace the head.

Thats terrible news. Hope you can get it all sorted without to much trouble.

doesnt take all that much diesel, ID guess that in the right circumstance as little as 2l of dieso in the engine oil will let it happen.

dieso vents out the crankcase vent- into the air stream- blended by the turbo- pushed into the inlet- combustion and your on the way to a runaway.

depending on how its going to get fixed, Im happy to lend you a hand if your happy for me to take (temporairly) the dead motor as I have some serious experimenting to do on a TD5 but I dont want to risk doing it on a good engine if I dont have to.

Thanks to you all for your comments and offers, and i am sure the motor did all the things you all suggest
I have ordered a new TD5 from landrover Aus should be here next week, certainly not a cheap exercise but i have to remind myself i will have a fitted out Disco.
Bilstien shocks and springs last year with with a new motor we should be away and running again in a couple of weeks.

If you are still with us penno,,
I'd be asking whoever fits it to check the oil pump bolt(yes there have been late model ones not quite right)

Hope its not too up front but what is a ballpark figure for a new long motor?

I was told $16,000 for a crate motor a few years ago:eek:.

A factory exchange engine is the go these days. Still not cheap though but around 1/2 the above prices.
