Hi all,
Hope this hasn't been covered too many times
We currently have a 96 Prado and are looking at upgrading to a D3. We have been shown a 05 TD HSE with 130kkm on the clock which we are interested in, it appears to be in good nick with a good service history. We would be taking up the extended 5 year warrenty.
Can you help us with what to look for when purchasing a used D3 and also can you recomend a mechanic on the southside of Brisbane to check it out.
Thanks

Hi Guss and welcome.
I don't think you will be dissapointed with a D3 as long as the price is right :). 05 is the first model that came out to Australia and there were some issues that have since been fixed up. One that comes to mind is the first model of the air compressor that runs the suspension. Most things have been fixed with software changes so it is critical that any updates have been applied. If it has been serviced by the dealer then check with them to make sure.
I have only used Southside Landrover for service and they have been pretty good for me so far. They are still there as a service dept even though the sales has shut down. I have heard good things about MR over the north side but can't help you on the southside as mine is still under warranty.
There are others on here with much longer experience with the D3 and also you could ask over on D3.co.uk as they have an Australian section.
Good Luck,
TimJ.

The extended warranty is a good idea. Get a copy of the PDS and look at it though.
As said early models had some issues which should have been fixed with a full dealer service history they should be sorted.
How much are they asking?

Welcome Guss.
Like Tim I have my D3 serviced by Austral at Wooloongabba. They've copped a lot of flak but I've had no issues with them to date. An alternative is Knight's house of rover at Bowen Hills. I haven't used them but they service a mate of mine's D3 TDV6 SE.
As Tim said re the HSE D3, depends on the price. Redbook says $47-52k. With 130k's on it I'd be looking for a price at the lower end for sure.
I assume you should be able to have LR look up it's service history to see the the '05 issue of air suspension has been dealt with.
Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback
I think the price is good but it is a little hard to know as we are trading in the Prado. I believe the price is around $42k with the 5 year warranty.
I will have a good look at the PDS (Service Log??), to see what has been done, I'll let you know.
What expensive services can we expect? timing belt/cam belt?
We are looking forward to the D3, planning our next camping trip already.
Thanks again,

PDS is the Public disclosure statement for the extended warranty insurance.
The service log is what has been signed each time it was serviced. Check who served it and get a log from them.

As said, if it's been regularly serviced any issues should have been fixed.
The timing belts are due for replacement until 168000km.

Good choice with the D3!
In addition to the stuff mentioned above, the turbo has been redesigned a few times since launch, so make sure yours is ok. Only other common issues are the EGRs, which would have been sorted by now, hopefully, and the EPB ( electric handbrake) which is ok with regular maintenance.
If it has a rear diff-lock, make sure the latest software (released Jan 2009) has been installed - there is a TSB for this.
