Hi all. I am having trouble with my 98 300tdi:( Back in January I was on my way to Levuka when all of a sudden the engine stopped. There was no warning! After a while it started again and it was running fine. When we were at Levuka it did it a couple more times. Got it home no worries. Hubby took off the sedimenter and it looked like this.

We cleaned it out and put new seals in and it ran great until Thursday:mad: I was waiting at a set of lights and without warning it cut out again. Today we took out the fuel pick-up from the tank and took off the sedimenter and disconnected the fuel line from the lift pump and blew the lines to make sure they were clean. There was nowhere near as much sludge as the photo. Checked in the fuel tank and it seemed clean. So my question is could this be the reason for stopping:confused: I apologise if this is confusing but its the best way I can think of to explain it. Thanks in advance!

certainly can...
that looks like its got a healthy dose of diesel snot in it. once that gets in good luck.
change all your filters, while your at it blow out all your lines back towards the tank with compressed air and then flush them with metho or proper diesel fuel anti fungus agent drain the fuel out of the tank, dose it with the antifungal agent, replace the filters refill the tank, prime the engine again and see if it goes.

Sounds a bit to me like the "spider" engine immobiliser behind the heater controls. Mine did the same thing as yours and it ended uo being this. Resolded a heap of dry joints and all is well. No problems since resoldering.

Thanks Dave. We have blown out the fuel lines and put in some diesel conditioner which says for Diesel bugs. We are also replacing the fuel filter on Wednesday. Will see how that goes.
Warren, Thanks for the link. It does sound like that might be the problem. I will get hubby to pull it apart and have a look. I did think if it was a fuel problem it would cough and splutter which it didnt. He did say that he thought it was to do with the immobiliser. So thanks again.
Will keep you informed!!

for testing purposes you can bypass the immobiliser by hooking up an auxilery feed to the cut off solenoid on the fuel pump that way if the immobiliser tries to kill it the aux feed will keep it running.
if you rig a diode between the immobiliser feed and the connection of the aux feed/solenoid you can then use a multimeter or test lamp to indicate weather the spider is causing the problem.

simular symtoms to what I had when my turbo hose colapsed internally. The hose at fault was the elbow. I chased a fuel problem for 2 days to the extent of changing filter head because I thought I was getting air ingress. Check all your hoses between turbo and intercooler and inlet manifold

Thanks again for the info. I got hubby to have a look and there were 3 that needed resoldering. So far so good.
