View Full Version : Rear e-diff

The rear differential on my six month old V6 SE is very noisy and is about to be replaced under warranty. I have the e-diff fitted, however when I discussed the parts with the dealer he seemed to think that the centre diff is the only locker. I'm concerned that they might order the wrong part and I will have to wait again for the replacement (its taking two weeks at least to get the spares because they don't keep them here in the west). So, does anyone know if the rear diff is the same for both locking and standard diffs?

If you have the factory fitted optional rear locking diff, it is a different diff to the standard non locking diff.

Hopefully the part would have been ordered via the VIN so you'll end up with the right part.
They'll soon find out though when they have a spare plug after the repair :(.

The rear diff would be different between locked and unlocked versions, of that you can be sure.
Re rear and centre diffs; different locations. The rear e-diff is between the two rear wheels. The centre diff is between the front and rear axles. I'm not even sure the "centre diff" in a D3 is actually a diff, usually these days they are some form of intelligent clutch which can approprtion torque in varying amounts front and rear, a far cry from the pure open diff or locked binary on/off like you find in the Defender. I forget exactly what LR have fitted to the D3 though.

Thank you all, both for the quality and speed of replies! Really impressive stuff. I'll contact the dealer and make sure that they have realised that it is not the standard diff.

There is also a software update for the locking rear diff.

Are the open of locking (or both) diffs on the D3 problematic or is this more of a one off?

The D3 centre diff and the rear e-diff work on the same principle - clutch plates where the pressure is varied by a motor operating a cam resulting in variable, computer-controlled slip.

No.
There was an issue with some rear e-diffs losing calibration after locking, hence the software upgrade.
I've not had a problem in 145000km and I've only heard of a few with the software issue; but will be getting mine upgraded next time I'm near a dealer anyway.

Jamo,
Apparently here in Oz, the software upgrade is only applied if your car has logged an appropriate DTC (can't recall the number - 1530?). So you might have to use it in earnest to get the DTC logged.;)

Ahhh. sounds like I do need to test it some more then.:D
No faults logged in mine (in fact, when I cleared the faults caused by the collapsing battery, the rear diff was the only thing that didn't register a fault!)
Moot point anyway. I'm sure they'll do mine if I ask. After all, I'm paying:(
