I don't have one but have a bit of experience with them. They're a beaut motor & the pick of the early Freelanders.
Watch for the usual rear tyre wear problem though. It might have been sorted by now with a later IRD hopefully.

Mine has now done over 250,000km and is still going strong. Only major issue was a failed viscous coupling that caused the IRD to fail - is a design issue that is corrected with later parts. If I had known about the issue at the time I would have detected the intending failure.
Other wise the cars has had no major issues - and others I have been able to fix.

PS - the HDC switch in the gear leaver is crap and fails as do the replacements - I fixed mine with a micro switch from Jaycar and a bit of plastic glue.

Mine is 170,000 / 11 years old.
Previous owner had a few problems with it but it was mainly due excessive speed on gibbers and following big rigs through the Corner Country.
Apart from normal wear I didn't have any major trouble where the Flandie would "fail to proceed". Issues in the last 12 months were radiator was cracked, heater core leaking and front driver's side drive shaft (CVs). As for tyre wear, mine is doing OK - nothing unusual, but I know the IRD has been replaced so it's not the original.
Mine is 1998 2.0L diesel (di) so quite basic. Somewhat sluggish off the mark but holds its own on the highway. I don't like pushing it and let it go up hills at its own pace, but I do get good economy - between 550 and 600km per tank in the city. It is my daily driver and the family car, so SWMBO doesn't let me play with it too much ;) It fits me, SWMBO our 4yo and all the stuff we need for our trips nicely . I find it very comfortable and compared to a lot of cars visibility is great - probably the low dash helps.
The Flandie did really well on Fraser Island and anything or anywhere we feel like going as a family. It is not in the same class as Discos but significantly better than anything else in its class. Know its limits and it will serve you well.
Regular maintenance is the key and it would be beneficial to get it serviced with someone who knows Land Rovers.
In all honesty (taking into account my bias towards Land Rovers) there are better cars out there, but for my needs and lifestyle the Flandie just fits. The only thing that gets my goat is the fact that accessories are very limited and can be pricy when acquired through the dealers, but on a lighter note, there are people who are getting rid of 'old parts' so if you hunt around you can get a good price for a lot of things... except for a snorkel. Can't find one.

I've got one of the very first to be produced.
It only has 90k on the clock but it was used on the Camel Trophy and then as a training vehicle around Eastnor... It has been well & truly flogged but it's still going strong. :D
As was said before, the XEDI is the pick of the early cars. It's either that or a TD4 Auto.

I've got 256k on mine. All of the usual small Freelander problems, however nothing too major. I source most parts from the UK as they are cheaper and easier to find via the net.I've replaced the IRD and a couple of cv's since 102km and is still going strong.I gotten 112km out of a set of Coopers and still lots of tread left.

Found this one a while ago, havn't actually got one but read an article from a guy who had and, from what I can remember, he didn't have anything bad to say about it. Plus it looks a million times better than the camel trophy ones...

Those snorkels get a good rap but are apparently real hard to get. A guy in the states on muddy oval had one if you want to ask questions.

The HDC light does come on the dash when HDC is selected - when operating within parameters it is Green.
The Handbook has a whole range of options - not sure what is what - if you are going too fast or not in first or reverse the light is orange, it flashes if the computer thinks the HDC has been used too much etc etc etc. You need to look in the handbook for all the light options.
