td5 engine bogging out

hi all im new so have patience!
ive recently brought a 2004 td5 disco, and have found that if i put my foot down hard the engine will climb very well till the tacho reaches 3000-3500 revs then the engine seems to bog out like its being restricted or something of that nature. ive taken the car to a landy specialist and he hooked it up to the comp and could not find anything wrong. the car is still under warranty from the dealer but the end of the warranty is approaching and im starting to get a little nervy. has anyone out there had a similar problem or heard of this prob before. as i said im new to land rover so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nath - try doing a few searches on turbo hoses with/without the words silicone and you'll turn up a few threads. The inside of the hoses can delaminate and block airflow, although 2004 is maybe a bit new for that.

The other option might be overboost. If the turbo boosts above 14 (?) PSI the ECU will cut fuel to protect the engine. Not sure if this logs a fault code, but someone will be along soon to say yay or nay to this.

Could be a boost issue.
Just below the turbo inlet hose is the turbo modulator valve.Check the state of the hoses in and out.
The valve itself may be faulty,not expensive to replace and can cause these issues if not working properly.

If it was overboosting and fuel cut-out invoked, there would be a fault code stored which the diagnostics should have revealed.

Does the engine performance drop off compared with lower in the rev range or does it faulter, not run evenly, significant misfire or do anything that indicates a fault condition?

Do you have the opportunity to drive another TD5 for comparison? In stock form they struggle in the higher revs although they still get to 4,000 rpm and do it without faultering.

There are several improvements that can be made:
1. get the ecu "chipped"
2. install a larger intercooler
3. remove restrictive exhaust flex joint
4. remove dust extractor from the airbox (if it is present)

hi gents,
i have the same problem as mentioned above, mine is a td5 2002 auto with 100,000klms. it runs fine tows great, but if you give a boot full between 0-60klm its like a rev limiter cutting in if you plant foot at 100klm+ to overtake sometimes it cuts out or just revs like its supposed to 4000rpm abouts.. i asked around and was told it was rev limiter cutting in.? this was from another v8 driver so didnt take to much notice. but after reading this thread got me thinking again.as stated engine runs like a dream just cuts out power when pedal is planted.
anyone thats recomended here in melb to check this thing out.?

I have got a feeling that they might just be a bit of a slug!
Mine was hopeless, I fitted silicone i/c hoses & that made quite a difference, then I fitted an EGR removal kit & catch tank, improvement was minimal, but noticeable.
This week I had occasion, due to having an oil leak fixed in the TD5, to drive my 1997 Nissan Terrano 2 2.7 TDI, WOW! It was like getting into a sports car, what a luxury to be able to accelerate UPHILL in 5th gear.

Now I am in real quandary, we are doing the CSR in July towing a camper trailer, do I take the TD5, or the Nissan T2 that has just clicked 400,000kms?

My intercooler hose ballooned internally also, but you would notice a heap of black smoke on acceleration from exhaust also if this was the case.

A really good mechanic in Melbourne...Roverland out on Dorset rd.
More than helpful, honest, no bull, knows his stuff really well. Wont fix if its not needed and will tell you first if it does.

Cutting-out at revs indicates a problem and mostly likely with excessive boost. This could be due to a sticky wastegate, faulty wastegate actuator or a faulty boost controller, or even the actuator rod unclipped from the wastegate.

If the turbo hoses aren't the problem, there is another possibility and it won't necessarily show a fault code. The airflow meter can cause a lack of power like this, search here is your friend, try 'MAF' or 'TD5 Airflow meter' there are lots of posts.

if it does this in neutral (not reving out ) then it could be poor low presure fuel supply. check the tank mounted fuel pump is running.

Had similar problem, it turned out to be the wastegate was out of adjustment which caused it to over turbo.

I get this some times as well. Or use to. So here my theory,
1: Oil could be building up in the Inter cooler. (Comes from the engine cover breather).
Fix- give it a good hard run up a hill in 3rd to 4th to 110km/h, every so often.
2:Muffler could be collapsing, restricting high gas flow.
Fix- remove, sounds and go's better regardless.
3:Bad fuel.
Fix-try different retailer for awhile. change filter.

this seems like a common cause of such symptoms - and cheap enough to confirm one way or another - a $50 part and very easy to fit yourself...

Not quite common, VERY common..........If you have a TD5 and have not changed one, you WILL at some point ;) takes about 2 hours max from start to finish.

Just bought my 2001 TD5, 126k's, First drive Iput my foot hard down at about 80 kph & it seemd as if it changed to a very low gear, reved quickly to over 4000 cut out for a second & went again to over 4g's giving a surging effect. I thought it was hitting a rev limit causing this due to changing down to low. Soon learnt to keep my foot slightly off the floor when in a hurry & all seems fine

Mine did this....fault was MAF sensor,replaced,all ok.You could try cleaning it & see if there are any improvements.
