Ok, if I can sell my ambulance I may have found a nice rangie to buy. an 84 4 door on 33's and gas. so anybody got pics of a similar unit, and what would it be worth presuming reasonable condition?

its not a gold one is it???
whats it worth, geez, thats anyones guess. most likely around the 2 to 3 grand mark. Stooge sold his recently, sounds similar for $3500 but 86mud sold his much much much more decked out truck for just $6k recently, so there is no rhyme or reason to prices, is just what you are prepared to pay for it.
good luck :D

your 2-3 grand is the price range. no ida of condition or colour yet, finding out more. jsut a pity it rests on me selling my ambulance. anybody want one. It is very rare (the add is in REMLR or PM me if anybody is seriously intrested, plug, plug :lol2: ).
But seriously, what should I be looking at if I get a look in at the vehicle? It has an ally roof rack as well I think he said.

rust in the body and rear tailgate etc, coolant or lack there of and the electrics would be my first ports of call....

Cheers, thanks for that inc. I presume it's lifted to fit 33's. lift doesn't concern me, but 33's might be downsized,. more than I would need.

ok, some more info ;)
84 four door. 3.5 on gas. Auto.
comes with 33 bfg's plus standard rims and tyres.
A bit rough, no rego (needs to go over the pts). Body lift in it, but easy to remove if I want.
indicators need fixing (can do ;) )
Comes with a 4.4 in the box, but with cracked pistons. probably leave it standard. i've had my fill of conversions.
So what do people think. It's a bit rough, but wouldn't take much to clean up i'm told. I'll look over it on the weekend I think ;)

Just looked up the address, i've driven past it a few times lately. I like the colour, and it doesn't look too bad ;)
So, would parts from an earleir 2 door fit it as little brother has a few of them ;)

I sold my 88 Hiline 3.5 Fi with Tasmanian plates for $ 4000 to give you an idea

wow, so 1/2 that without rego, but able to pass it wouldn't be too bad then. I just have to find a buyer for my ambulance.

Not sure in Tassie but you may need an engineer to certify body lift and 33s.
The 3.5 on gas will make you insane. So the 4.4 would be an option. They nearly all crack pistons. I use Holden star fire or 173 pistons with a light pin hone as a cheap replacement. Rover 3.5 pistons have a higher compression height so will end up around 12.5:1 I think. Be OK on full gas. Bit of stuffing around to put the 4.4 in mounts, drilling etc.
Why is it rough? Body, Interior,Rust in chassis or mechanically.
It would want to be cheap.
May be cheaper and easier to find one still on the road in the long run.

Why you do not get THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/RANGE-ROVER-4x4_W0QQitemZ220375472217QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car s?hash=item220375472217&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318) 2 doors Rangie from Ballarat and you will be able to keep the fellows from down south (Mark & Tim with the green RR) honest? :D

Chucaro, the reason I was looking at this one, price and location and on gas. Personally i'd prefer a diesel disco, and I may continue to save for one, but my brother also has a lot of rangie spares off his spare 2 door. Hence why this is also attractive.
Tony, there isn't much around here for that kind of price. this for example is about double, and not really that much better Tassie Cars - Advert Details (http://www.tassiecars.com.au/detail.jsp?id=23910&ti=true) . But then again i've yet to give the rangie a look in the flesh yet ;)
same issue with this one

a flight opver to vic and a boat trip back for this price of vehicle isn't really worth it in my book.

Richard,
If the standard transfer case is still in it, it wouldn't pull the skin off a pudding with 33's!! Even in standard trim they were incredibly gutless, as it has the 3spd torqueflyte and 1:1 high range. This can be overcome with a defender 1.410:1 transfer case, but it will still be a bit of a slug.
$2k sounds OK, but I'd still get it looked at if you can!

My thoughts are a 86/7.
Basic and even withthe LT77, they will go if looked after.
Even a 4 speed auto is nice but put a 3.9 or 4.6 in.
Mine was a stonker. Never let me down.
Had electric windows that had to get fixed and not much more that could fail.
Done Koni shocks and Lovell springs with 50 body lift.
Great ride, sold only to make room for next one.
Thats my pick but start of with a straight car, put in what makes you happy by a skilled tradesman and flog it hard, they are tough.
Hmm, just bought another Disco, what am I doing- Listen to myself and buy a RRC.
Best of luck.

IMO FWIW
RRC of that age, enthusiast maintained and in all round very good condition would be looking at 2500-3500k max.
if its full of bling and goodies then you can adjust the price accordingly.

G'day Phoenix :)
I picked my 1985 Rangie 4 door up from the markets section here for $3500 4 months rego, 5speed LT77,3.5 carbied, duel fuel, 105 litre tank (wet test), factory alloy brush bar with 2 Hella rally 1000's,factory roof rack, duel batteries,15in mags (globe)with 235-75-15s, front seat armrests good radio/amp, tinted glass, and only 189 697 klms, now has 195,258 klms, had broken alternator bracket, needed wind screen replaced (got stonechips on return trip to Qld) and needed headlight upgrade relays,(done) all interior original carpets, etc right down to hand books and paint, was on it's original NSW 1985 rego plates :D
Carbied are easier to work on and parts are still available,
Things to look for, rust in footwells and inner rear guards, bad head/blinker/horn switch, water leaks, alternator bracket broken, leaking powersteering box, noisey gearbox, "A" frame ball joint noise on takeoff, vague steering,
cheers

Thanks for the tips all. I'd not really planned to keep 33's on it. Probably get them to on sell for other goodies or repairs ;) or even a swap for a 2nd set of rims with a more normal size MT's for playtime.
What size did they come with, a 29 is that right? so a 30 or 31 would be a better play tyre size?
There isn't much choice down this way unless you know of anything down south justin. Clarkie, I tend to agree to value unless it is very tidy, but as I said, prices here are a bit inflated.
As for power, you have to remember i'm coming from a series 3 with the 2.6, this will feel like a world of power to me!!! Gas also appeals to me, despite losing storage to get it. The big roof rack should offset that loss to an extent.
I am keeping an eye open, and I have a couple of leads on buyers for the Ambulance which is heartening.

Will be so slow with the TF727 the 2.6 may be quicker. They chew a lot of power as the were designed to go behind Big Block Hemi V8's

G'day Phoenix :)
Yup! the 727 was a bit of a power hog about 15% was very good for it's day others sapped as much as 22%, but it was OK in the V8 Valiants but was rather leisurely in the 6's but it is a near industructable auto.
Went for a good run in my 3.5 5sp manual on gas yesterday and it cruises nicely at 105-110 kph on the highway.
cheers
