Here is a sneek preview of the TDV8 engine and D3 6 speed manual box with a LT230 defender transfer box we are fitting into a 100" defender smile.gif

The video is crap quality as its on a phone but ill upload some better ones soon.
Just does go to show anything is possibile and you can get the engine runing out of the car even tho people say its not possibile smile.gif

Lots more work to come yet sad.gif

BAS, have you got plans to expand the range of vehicles that you install the TDV8 into or for producing a generic installation kit. Well done on the pioneering once again!

Hi
Yes the plans i have are to be able to supply all that you need to make it run and drive, wies ecu fuel pump gearbox adapters etc etc.
You supply the engine and box and trans box
Then fit it into the car of your choice.

I have if time and cost lets me a plan to make TDV8 defender , TDV8 into a Discovery 3.
TDV6 in a defender.
And a TDV8 in a RRS chassis but with a defender body on.

A whole aray of ideas floating around depending on time and cost.

Pardon my ignorance but I have a few questions

I don't want to sound blunt, these are questiosn that I have asked my self and with out the specific knowledge of the engines being used (the most advanced piston engine I know is the TD5) I need to ask them to your selves and others.

why is it so hard? its not a new engine, basicly just a regular 4 stroke so there fore if you unplug everything and gradually re-connect items it should run. So if you bolt on a starter moter it will turn over. Then if you connect a fuel tank with a pump and fuel lines it will self sustain.

From my knowledge of the TD5 the pump is always pumping and excess fuel returns to the tank. the injectors are mechanical electrical, they open on command from the engine flywheel position sensor and the electronic injector opens and closes to allow a certain amount of fuel in to the cylinder from the fuel gallery.

if you know the amount of air intake to each cylinder and the corerct ratio of diesel for that volume / mass of air (I beleive its about 18:1 by mass) then why can't you program the injectors to inject that amount of fuel?

this will get the engine to self sustain at a specific RPM eg idle at 780rpm?

in order to get the injectors to fire at the appropriate time, you must have a flywheel sensor and so if you increase the amount of time that the injector is open, more fuel will inject and the engine will speed up, the injectors will continue to fire at the correct time from the signal from the flywheel.

I think that this similar to how a simple Series3 engine runs, everything else that is added like ambient air temp, mass air flow, and the like are additions to make the engine run more efficiently and enable an easier build, a loom for teh engine plugs in to a black box, then another loom plugs to teh plack box that displays info - like the RPM display, the engine doesnt actually need the RPM display to run. I think / wonder that its items like this that are making the job much harder.

Another example, the TD5 the ECU takes the coolant temperature, I dont think that this is nessecary for the running of an engine, its good to have but I dont see why its nessecary for the running of an engine, an aircooled engines doest have a coolant sensor!

I realise that this requires making and programming ECU and microchips and stuff (that I always struggle with) but I am thinking that if you have the knowledge and skill to 'hack' into existing systems and introduce performance upgrades then you could do the same with a new 'blank' ECU? get it running wiht basic stuff and then improve it.

Like I said, I am trying to understand the difficulties that you are experienceing and wanting to improve my knowledge.

thanks in advance

Hi
First off mapping is a totaly different ball game to working with CAN and CAN systems,Its ok mapping via CAN as we only use this to communicate to the relevent module we need.

Regarding this engine build its totaly different and could not be more far away from the run of the mill mapping.

First you need to understand what, why and when the engine ecu talks to the rest of the car and the cars modules, then you need to reverse the coding to stop this.
if you dont stop this then you will have many problems with the running due to the engine ecu seeing things missing from its original environment and no doubt run in limp mode.

Along with things like, if it does not see the instrument cluster why does it not start the engine, same for the body control ecu etc etc , the list goes on.

Pete, saw the article in the July LRO mag: well done, that man.

That TDV6 in the Deefer 90 looks the biz!

How about a kit for the P38 4.6 HC into a Defender?

I tried to look at your web site but 1/2 the pages just had titles and no content, when are you looking to release a kit for the tdv6/v8 conversion as if my td5 ever dies it would be a good "excuse" to replace it.

Well, since we can't buy one or have one converted by BAS, maybe Pete will give us some trade secrets?

How about a TDV8 engine with all the electronic stripped off. Use two 300Tdi fuel pumps and run mechanical injection.

Or a TDV6 with all the electronics stripped off. Use one fuel pump (Landcruiser 1HZ, etc) and run mechanical injection.

I realize you won't get as much power, or as good economy, as with full electronic control, but apart from setting it all up it should be simpler for bush use.

I wouldn't mind trying a mechanically injected TDV8 in my RRC :p.

Hi
firstly i can only say sorry about my site, we have just moved to a secure host server ready for our online shop which means we have to build a totally new site , hence the pages missing. only so many hrs in a day :(

Re the 4.6, i dont really do petrol to be honest so im not sure if it would be something we would do.
Their are many people who have fitted the 4.6 so im sure info will be available.

The TDV6, inbetween jobs we are trying to works out a user friendly kit, so it may be available at some point.

or my car is for sale unused as in the pics :)

BigJon has some interesting thoughts there......

Now the Nissan TDV6 has been announced over here for the Navara/Pathfinder. Since that engine is in the Renaults as well as the Nissans now, we're likely to see thousands available in a year or 6.

Is it POSSIBLE to Luddite-ize a very advanced multi-sensor motor like that?

Pete, your thoughts on the LR TDV6/8 as a reverted engine?
