Hello Everyone,

Someone has probibly asked this before, but can you push start the new Ford engined Defender if the battery is dead flat ? Iam asking because of the different type of injector system being electric . Not familiar with this type.

good question, most electronic management need around 5 to 6 volt I think and the starter motor is stuggling at 10v so you have some voltage up your sleeve there so it should work. but cant be sure, leave your lights on at night and push it in the morning then you can tell us all :p

well i dont no if you can, we tryed push starting my td5 defender an there was just enof voltige to thow the starter but not tern it, an we couldent push start it then, i just wouldent kick over, altho we wernt in low range witch would help to start it,

In theory low range will make the engine turn faster, but it will be much harder to turn the engine over, High second or third or even 4th if you can push it fast enough, is the go. Diesels are harder to bump start than petrols due to the compression - you need a fair bit of speed and a fairly high gear, otherwise the wheels will just lock up. Locking the CDL will also help to get the engine turning and prevent wheel lock up.

Don't know about the new one, but I know I couldn't push start a Td5 with a dead flat (not even dash lights) battery.
I suggest it needs a certain voltage to wake the computer up ;)
Jump started fine though.

Off the top of my head I think it was 10v and then the ECU shuts down to prevent damage.
So no, you won't push start one!

Thanks guys, I guessed as much. Thought you have to have some power at least ! Thats why I want an auxilary battery on the camper trailer !

None of my site machines will start unless there is some power to get the systems working,at least 12 volts. Pat

You should never attempt to push or roll start any vehicle except in a very high gear, usually the most direct drive (in most Landrovers fourth - high). Using a lower gear, while it theoretically turns the engine faster, makes it a lot harder to move and will usually result in the vehicle either stopping or skidding when you let the clutch in rather than turning the engine. If the clutch is engaged suddenly to avoid this, there is a real danger of damaging something due to the unfair strain from the impact load.
And after all, you do not need to turn the engine fast - the starter does not, and for a diesel, you usually just need to turn past one compression and it will start, even down to an engine speed of say 150rpm. All you have to do is put your foot on the clutch as soon as it starts.

We've successfully started an early TD5 defender on a hill before, in 3rd I think. Fired up quite easily.

Must say, the usual problem with a push start - me included - is leaving the ignition off!
