Hoping someone can help with infomation regarding the best way to go. I have a disco tdi series 1 98, on recent trip noticed car running extremly rough. After checking, Racv told me that I have possibly broken a piston or something very serious. I had the car towed home some 450km. The mechanic says its not worth repairing the motor as the cost to pull motor down would be dearer than a replacement motor. Can anybody advise me where to start looking for a motor or does anyone know of any test I could do to find out exactly what has caused the problem. The car is now stranded at my house.

Hi Bill,

Are they sure about the piston??? If the head gasket blows in a certain place, it can give HUGE crankase pressure exactly like a broken piston. AND, it isn't necessarily a throwaway either, unless it was an overheat and the pistons are smeared up and down the cylinder walls....:o I would get the head off and check thoroughly before condemning the whole unit.
A replacement engine is in the region of at least $3500 for a used one, why NOT remove the head and check??? Of course a reco engine will be about 2 to 3 K more, but I would be checking before chucking! Where are you situated?

Close to you would be Cardigan Auto Engineering,14 Essex St, Moolap, VIC 3221 p: (03) 5248 7880

Used him for my old Rangie for parts and repairs.

Most wreckers in Geelong can list it on the hotline and get prices etc.

Or just google "land rover wreckers victoria"

Or a cheap fixer upper for someone?

Or try TriumphRoverSpares. Located near Adelaide, but will deliver to the door. Very reliable and they have vast stock of Landy vehicles and parts. 08 8384 6933 Ask for Phil or Ian.

I live in Lara and would be happy to give you hand to rip the head off it and have a look at what the actual problem is.
Haven't ever pulled a diesel head off but have done various petrol ones over the years. Wont cost you anything to have a look.

I've also got an engine crane that you are welcome to borrow if you need one.
