View Full Version : Show us your... '58 2L Series II!

There was a thread a little while ago in which a number of early 2L Series IIs came out of the woodwork - linked below:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-2-2a/56547-1958-series-2-worth-saving.html
For those who don't know, the very first Series II SWB models made in 1958 came with the 2L engine from the Series I. The LWB came with the 2.25 from the start and at some stage during the year the 2.25 was introduced into the SWB as well.
From the other thread, there are at least 5 of them on this forum - any others?

You have all seen "Gus" my shorty. (what the hey you can see it again :p)
Chassis number 143800259, currently in bits awaiting rebuild. Has a 186 Holden at the moment but will cop a 2.25 during resto. Not going back to original - building up as practical bush truck. May restore to original one day. :)

1958 ex-army Truck Command Recconaissance called Roger. Totally shagged chassis and axles from putting boats into salt water for years. I have every intention of restoring it, after it nearly went to the tip a few years ago.

That's interesting Charlie... I thought all the CRs were purchased after the change to the 2.25?
It is likely I am wrong though. ;)
EDIT - I note your chassis number makes it a '59... I am almost certain there were no 2L Series IIs made in '59... ;) Might wanna check that, or let me know if I am mistaken. :)

Looks like that was it then? :(
Only 5 (maybe 6?) of the 2L Series IIs on here... gee I knew they were uncommon but I didn't think they were that uncommon...

I've known about them ever since I had a 58 Landrover 88 in 1963-65 - but it was a 2.25 (original). So definitely no 1959 2.0s.

Whoops sorry - saw the 1958 bit and missed the 2 litre part.
I didn't know it was a 1959, so thanks for pointing that out Shonks; I assumed that the 1958 contract date on the plate meant that it was made in '58.
Cheers Charlie

No worries mate. :)
These chassis numbers are pretty easily calculated - the 4th number is the year. ;)
The later and earlier types were different and not as sensible IMHO. :(

G'day All, All of the S2 C/R vehicles I have seen have 2.25lt engines fitted, but they are different to the later type 2.25lt, they are 1 bolt less on the water pump (hence a different timing case cover), the elbow on the head for the thermostat is different, the military must have specified that the exhaust must point downwards as I've never seen the upside down type ex/manifold fitted, I suppose there a few more diferences as well anyway cheers Dennis:angel:
ps I'm not infallible either LOL,,.

Ralph is the series 2 who has a 2L engine and I believe it to have all matching numbers, but I can find the numbers at the moment. But because it is on the farm and many miles from here I will post them when I get them.

Yep Andrew he running the old 2L, The motor I believe has never been touched and therefore is starting to get quite tired. We have done a few things to keep him going, as he is only a farm truck, with many dings and scratches. Well put it this way we learnt as kids to drive in this car on the farm, so it has seen about 20 or so learner drivers. He still climbs the hills on the farm with ease and goes places where the tojo cant go, and when the tojo gets new tires we put the old ones on Ralph and it does him until next time the tojo gets new tyres.
Now that my grandad passed away last year, I dont get up as often as I would like but I still enjoy walking out down the paddock and conecting up the battery, flicking the starter swith and pressing the starter button, and you know what it generally starts first go.

Photos attached of my 2 litre Series 2.
Needs doors, door tops, rear chassis repair, bulkhead etc. Has a 2.25 motor fitted and drives OK but rear spring hangers have collapsed.
Original engine was supplied, sump has rotted out where it was stored on a dirt floor. Original owner claimed it ran low oil pressure so he changed it to the 2.25.
Will get round to doing some work on it soon......

I hve taken a few pics of Ralph on the long weekend. For the first time ever we were not able to drive him as he has a blown brake master cylinder. So unfortunatly I was not able to get some better photos as where he is parked I cant photo around. I have the chassis number and I could not find the engine number as it has been covered with numetal and I am not game enough to remove it as it was probably put there for a reason at some stage.

And I am not allowed to access them. I think that it is possible to repost in another section (reusing the existing file), if you know how. Maybe a moderator can help.
As to how many older Series 2s there are in Australia, probably a bit difficult to say, as a lot of them will be stored, inactive. But although the entire Series 2 production was only three years (1958-61), this was in the period when there were no real alternatives, and sales in Australia were very high, being used by most government departments, as well as being pretty much standard for farmers (at least the better off ones).
But if you include the Series 2a, being sold for three times as long, there are a lot more about. My experience suggests most common are ones from the mid sixties, but again, a lot are inactive. For Series Landrovers in general, Series three are most common actually in use, because they were sold for even longer than 2as and are newer, although the peak sales volumes of Landrovers in Australia was probably in Series 2a times.

143800386 (Lordmacclesfield)

143800452 (Loubrey) "Dumble"
143800485 (dickyjoe)
143800557 (gromit)
143800622 (Seriestwo) "Ralph"
I've obviously posted a seperate thread when I got my Series II "Dumble" early in December, but seeing as this thread is still alive I'll list him here as well.
"Dumble" hails from a farming community named Dumbleyung in the WA wheatbelt and while I haven't had the opportunity to track down much information, I certainly intend to do so.
He is vehicle number 143800452 and he has his original 2.0 liter engine 141802335. In fact every single component other than the dynamo shows manufacture date as 1958 and even the two pieces of windscreen glass and fixed side windows dates from Jan/Feb/Mar 1958.
Cheers,
Lou
