View Full Version : Brake issues on my P38

Hey all,

I've had some lights and warnings come on recently and won't be able to get my P38 to the mechanics for some time yet. Thought someone might have a prediction for me?!

The brake pads are fine and the brake fluid level was a little low but now at normal.

The brakes seem to work ok but might be a little soft, could be just me though..
When i tap the brakes, i get three lights flash on for a split second - Handbrake, ABS and Traction. If i do this a few times, i get the text warning "traction failure" or "traction over heat" so guessing the traction is a big part of the issue. The traction control "clicking" sound still occurs when it should but not sure if it's actually doing anything...

Not knowing a lot about what this could be, i'm guessing that a sensor has died (fingers crossed that's all it is) or i need to replace a brake ECU (if one exists?)

Any ideas?

Thanks!

D

When you say 'tap the brakes', is the pedal moving just enough to activate the brake switch or enough to operate the brakes?

If the first, then it might be a switch issue. Maybe try removing it & refitting it so it's adjusted correctly.

If the latter, then it might need some proper diagnosis.

The P38 sensors are uually very reliable. I don't think we've ever replaced one. The booster can be a problem but still rare. The pumps can wear & overheat which cause pressure problems & bring up the warning lights.

The symptoms indicate a failed nitrogen accumulator or a dying pressure pump.

Can be a number of things, but in my experience three warning lights together mean lack of pressure. As others have said it can be accumulator, pressure switch or pump.
Are you experiencing any strange sensations through the pedal???what year is the RR.

Thanks for the responses all;

Sounds like the accumulator then.

"Tapping the brakes" is a solid press to activate them rather than just a feather touch so i'm guessing it's more than the that sensor.

My P38 is a 97 model with 130k on the clock.

I'm sure the brakes feel softer than they should so a pressure issue may the case. I'll be booking it in asap.

I usually use Graeme Cooper but am now travelling all over the Sydney area so open to alternatives if anyone has any recommendations?

Thanks all,
D
