1958 S1 engine number

Hi I have a 88" series 1 from 1958 however with a 2 litre motor, the engine number is a bit different as I cant find the number prefex in the series 1 manual.
The engine number is 141893775, I was thinking maybe a replacment from an early series 2. Any ideas????

Interesting - my list has the later 2 litre from 1955 to 1961 so covers early Series 2 two litres have engine numbers beginning 571 or 170. Diesel engines can have numbers starting with 14 but the third number is always a 6.

Your number starting with 141 does not tie in with any series 1 1600, 2000 petrol or 2000 diesel series 1 engine that I have on my lists.

Your first intuition was correct the 141 prefix is indeed an engine from a 1958 series 2 88" wheelbase.

If you check the number in Classic Land Rover (http://www.classiclandrovers.no/?page=documents%2Fvinlookup&vin=141893775&engine=&gbox=&axle=) or CalVIN you will find the number recorded as a home market prefix. This is correct as all the RHD engines (and gearboxes, and axle assemblies) use the home market prefix.

As I mentioned, (in the series vehicles up to late series 3) the car number and chassis number (should be the same) and the axle assemblies, gearboxes and engines share the same prefix number sequence and suffix for the drive position of the vehicle or component. So if you want to find out what model a rear diff came from punch the number into Classic Land Rovers as if it were the chassis number and you will find out the model. In the series 2a models you may have to add a suffix letter but what ever letter you use it will give you the information on wheelbase length and drivers side although not year.

I should point out that this information only rings true for Land Rover models including 1951 through to the introduction of the European Standard VIN sequence. In each of the years 1948 through 1950, basic Land Rovers had a single sequence where you could not determine anything other than it's "model year" (rather than it's actual year of manufacture) and serial number. Mostly that is OK because they all had the same wheelbase and engine capacity, however you have to use other reference documents (if any) to determine it's market or build location.

I am looking at a s1. Chassis number-113800079 engine number-27175967k- is this a late series 2A diesel or an early s3 diesel?
