View Full Version : EAS fault unlock diagnostic 'service'

Hi all,
I purchased the software and cable to plug into the P38 diagnostic system to check and unlock EAS faults (unless it is a major fault) as well as full adjustment capability.
Works just fine, so if any P38 owners in the Melbourne area have a EAS fault and want it 'cleared', PM me, I am more than happy, for a cuppa or a beer, to help you out.

Romulus,
I've been trying to get my EAS out of hardfault using EAS unlock plus the cable I purchased from Story Wilson
Not been successful yet.
Today all I could get in the Rx column was PP
I assume this is telling me the cable is not connected?
Cheers

Jeff, since you got your cable from Storey it is unlikely (but not impossible) that it is the problem.
Check the OBD port under the dash (where the cable plugs in) - it might have a bad connection. Remove the plastic panel near the OBD plug to get better access and give the wires a jiggle and try again. Worked for me when mine was playing up.
Are you using a serial port on your laptop/PC or a USB-to-serial convertor? If possible, try it with a PC/laptop that has a serial port to rule out the USB-to-serial adapter as a problem.
Cheers, Paul.

Jeff,
Make sure that you have repalced the EAS relay under the seat if you have had it out! (I know this one from experience!) Make sure it is connecting properly. Having that relay not connected gives exactly that reading.

Thanks for the replies.
All sorted now. Water from blocked AC drain had been dripping on the connector and corroded it. I had cleaned the drain a few months ago to solve the "wet passenger Carpet" syndrome.
Now I've soldered in an extra OBD connector on 12" extra length of wire, and mounted that in an easier to reach location, and out of way of any future water drips.
Cheers for now

Great idea Jeff - where did you put it? I've been planning on something similar but haven't found a good spot yet. Photos please?
Cheers, Paul.

Paul,
No pic yet, but I bought off the internet a flat mount OBD plug so just screwed it to that black panel half way between the foot light and grill for air.
Just makes it easier to plug into.
I will take a pic on the week end.
Cheers

yeah, OK - think I know the spot - I'm gonna go look...
I'm think of setting up a couple of OBDII ports with a switch... one for EASunlock to fix EAS faults, and the other for the FaultMate.
I don't like plugging/unplugging the OBDII port too much as it seems a bit fragile and figure that having the OBDII port permanently connected to one of three configurations would solve the issue, plus make it easier to leave it connected to the car-puter when I get that project up and running
position 1 = open/ not connected/ pass-through to spare OBDII plug
position 2 = closed on EASunlock plug
position 3 = closed on FaultMate MSV-2 plug
The other end would be a serial or serial-to-USB port that plugs in to the Car-puter... so I want to find a spot where up to three OBDII ports can be accessed easily and a switch to select which one is in use.
Cheers, Paul.

Paul,
The OBD plugs (I got two) were only $5 each and individual pins are super easy to replace if one is in doubt. They just push in from the rear, and a tiny screw driver is all thats needed to remove each pin.

Yeah, real PiTA trying to work out if it is the cable, plug or PC that is the problem.
If you have any spare OBDII plugs lying around, I'd appreciate if you can put it/them aside for me, especially if they still have the wiring attached.

Interesting site Jeff - I see they have a splitter cable too.
Hang on to your spare mate - you might need it yet, thanks anyway.
My want to do this little project is not too urgent - I have enough on my plate at the moment. It is yet another "roundtuit" job :D
Cheers, Paul.
