View Full Version : Bonnet glare esp from white

What's the glare like from a D3's bonnet especially if its white? I had a white vehicle once and its glare was significantly greater than a mate's fawn one and my RRC would have horrible glare if it was white.

White's not my colour choice but my choice is no longer available.

Thanks

Our D3 is white and no worries, nothing a pair of sunnys wont fix.
I do think white is a good overall neutral colour to have, as anything you put on the car will enhance its appearance without conflict.

Doesnt white save you around $1800 on any other colour?:(

I also think white doesnt show scratches, like some of those dark colours.

Had a white d2 & it was great

Does white have a layer of clear over it the way metalics do, or is just colour so that even light scratches are into the colour rather than into clear?
TIA

Graeme,

I do find the bonnet of my white D3 very bright when the sun's low but I've always been sensitive to it, don't know why. But as said above, nothing that a good pair of sunnies won't fix.

No layer of clear on the white that I know of but it definitely hides the scratches better than the metallic colours.

it wouldn't matter what colour the bonnet was, the glare is probably the same as any other car.
if you keep it clean and polished,
the sun will reflect off it.
so to solve your problem, just rock down to supercheap and buy a can of flat black and spray it on, then never wash your bonnet again,
or get up before the sun shines or drive in the dark
easy.

Hey Harry,

Blacks great, even when my son runs a black nickko marker all around the car & draws funny faces.
Works for me.:D
Only trouble it took three hours to get it off !!!

Mine's never clean enough to cause glare

Jamo,
How does it look always dirty? Our vehicle never gets washed and white seems to show the dirt. Our desired colour was Atacama Sand (chose it 12 months ago) to disguise the dirt and not be so stark in bright sunlight. We've pretty much decided to wait for the replacement colour in the next model due to having to live with it for many years to come.

Graeme, we saw a new D3SE 09 model yesterday in Silver.
This looked great with the new RR size rims.
Gave it the best look, but havnt got a spare 75k at the moment:mad:

12 months ago we went to look at D3s in earnest and were overwhelmed by all the silver vehicles at the dealership where every LR was silver. As our 1st D2 was also silver (current one is White Gold), we wanted something different but in reality, its the silvery colours that hide the dirt.

the silvery colours that hide the dirt.

Not wrong there.

My current RR is the first silver vehicle I’ve had and have never come across a colour that hides the dirt so well.

Lot less washing days.

Silver is definitely the best colour for hiding dirt and scratches. My D1 was the first silver car I owned and it was amazing how bad it could get and still look reasonably clean and polished. The new Defender is also silver and hides the dirt and scratches. I honestly think the thing is that reflective as well that it keeps the car cooler than if it was white.

Also white will stain - well the bauxite in the soil up here adds a pinky colour to anything after a few years:(

I've often wondered how much abuse the paintwork gets when its not washed, but I think the clear top coat on metalics doesn't get affected the way straight coloured paint does although I've not had non-metalic modern paintwork. I've noticed that bird droppings don't stain the clear top coat on metallic paint.

The white on the D3's doesn't stain any more than metallics. Well that's been my experience at least.

Graeme it always looks dirty, because it is! I do a lot of gravel road driving and some farms, but don't wash it that often. When it's clean, it stays clean for a while if I stay on the bitumen.

White is the coolest. (Some here have claimed that black is, but that's a simple misunderstanding of the physics involved.)

Everywhere else I've lived I'd agree with that statement. But the dirt up here is kind of special. It does stain the other colours, just not as noticeably.

I've never noticed the extra glare from the bonnet. The direct glare is so much worse than any reflection form the bonnet. My D3 is white but my daily drive is a black Eos. I drive into the sun going to work and into the setting sun going home. The Eos is worse IMO.
Having any road grim on the windscreen far out does any reflections.

That's the sort of experience I haven't had in my couple of short drives of D3s - I cannot remember how the bonnet is seen. I had to specifically look at my D2's bonnet because I don't recall looking at it when driving. I did notice that I see a dark reflection of the road, not the bonnet colour.

Want to make a bet Graeme!;)
I have seen many, many paint stains due to bird droppings...on every color combo. Yes they do stain the clear coat & actually start to eat it away.
Not nice.:( White does have a clear coat also.

p.s. The white one has gone, sold last Saturday.

Bird droppings mightn't but Fruit Bat droppings will eat through anything:mad:

G'day Sneigy,

My RRC gets heaps of sparrow droppings on it and they don't appear to do any damage. However, the whole vehicle was resprayed after light hail damage and maybe the clear coat is a different compound to what's used in production. Also a bird's diet must have a big impact on what damage their dropping do.

We had decided not to persue the white one, but thanks for the info anyway.

When I was inspecting my D3 prior to purchase, I didn't notice that the seller (widow of the owner) was judiciously opening & closing doors & standing in strategic spots so that I didn't notice the "etching" from bird droppings on two doors. :( I don't know how long the droppings had been there for this to occur.

Mine is Buckingham Blue.

Best Wishes,
Peter
