View Full Version : Towing with a 3.5 and ZF

Rangier Rover
29th March 2009, 04:56 PM
Had a situation today. My 120, Mitsu and HJ 75 are all out of action due to much needed sevice and repairs.
Well My old girls bloody Toyota decided to drop a timing tensioner wile it had a Double horse float and 2 large hay burners in it:mad:

The only viable tow vehicle I have is the Rangie.

I can tell you it was a painful 300 kms as would not pull 4th gear with the converter locked:(

Had to stay in 3rd at 3000 rpm for around 4 Hrs:eek: I was worried about toasting the transmission as was making some heat.

Just worked out the fuel usage...........

20.8 ltrs per 100:eek2:

Normally does 14 to 15 on a trip.

I want my 4BD1 back :BigCry:

Towing with a 3.5 ZF on 31s and 3.54s is not recommended:(

The power plant out of the big Efy parked next to the Rangie would fix it:twisted:

Is that all??? The latest figures from a touring 79 series diesel turbo shows 26.8l/100 while on the Canning stock route:twisted:. THATS poor fuel range .

With 4.11's and a good oil cooler I reckon it would be better than the current setup:D It'll use more fuel though:(

why isn't the Rangie getting a 4BD1T aswell???

Your turning into a full time mechanic

Running the lower gear puts less strain on the auto which = less heat on the tranny oil = no fried box

But towing with a 3.5 ... You did OK :) ... Before the days of overdrive, All V8's use to do 3000rpm to achieve 110kph

Painfull tho ;)

I already have the 3.9 and Blower sitting here. I need to get this mid life V8 thing out of my system:D

I hope to find a good LSE Soft Dash with shot running gear for my next Rangie. It will get the 4BD1 or Similar treatment if I can get away with it for engineering. Wont be able to body lift it unless can take the SRS out:(

I know Matt is a youngster and hasn't approached mid life yet, (But hes had more crisis's than us in his jam packed life so far I reckon:o) but after he drove my 4BD1T RR he immediately went home and took the supercharged 3.9V8 OUT and put a 4bd1T IN. Are you seeing where I am going here...?:D

:) I feel the 35s will put an end to the 4.11 advantage. When I have to tow I will put the 31s back on:twisted:

I can assure you it was pain full. The floor got so hot from the exhaust pipe the rubber sound dampening has melted over the ECU wiring harness:eek:

Your not far wrong with full time mechanic as now have more to do here than I can cope with:o
Hence why my projects are not progressing well:mad:

Have driven the Izuzu truck .... I understand :) ... LOVEMYRANGIE might be a source of information

You ever seen that show Overhaul in the US. Well..... would be the only way at the moment.

Winter is coming and I have a great heater in the R&D area:twisted:

Well... for comparison I had to drag the "fart cart" again today.... This Time with a 4BD1 T. What a difference I can asure you:D

On the same slight up hill the 3.5 couldn't pull 4th and had to rev the claw out of it to hold 100 kmh. The 4BD1 120 did id easy in 5th and only part throttle:cool: They are a great towing engine for sure. ;)

Not a Rangie but I think is relevant to this thread

Noooooo I know it is tempting but don't tow in 5th with the LT85. The later R380's are actually stronger in 5th gear than the Sanata is:(

If you want to tow at 100+ km/h, fit 33's and a 1:1 TF case High range and use 4th.

:)

Why have a V8?????:p:p

33s going back on soon:cool: The LT85 is the worst part of the 120:( Has had multi roller bearings fitted (Took some machining) and out put X drilled though. You right about 5th. The 4BD1 will eat the gear box if 5th used hard:(

Why a V8..... Smooth wide torque curve, Doesn't eat gear boxes and Doesn't sound like a billy goat farting in a jam tin:p

Can't have it both ways:(

My wife and I have plans to find an LSE and 4BDI it. But I must finish all my other projects 1st. Hang on I can't...... Just counted my days. I'm going to have to let some of them go:(

I know you'll like to see a 20 yr old 3.5 in pain again
The poor old rangie is on tow duty again:eek: Problem is we need the 5 seats so the 120 is out this time.

This time my wife is on her own:( Helping out a friend out. Told her to stick it in third other than going down steep hills;) Then will need 2nd to hold it;)
