Not sure why both of the front undercarage gave out but would have been worse if it didn't:eek:

Pulling it down on the weekend.

Reminds me of when I was in New Guinea - a mission plane hit a horse while landing. Write off one horse and one Do27. The DCA investigators were a bit miffed by the fact that the horse was in the mission freezer by the time they arrived.

Going up to the strip to recover this thing today... Have to pull the prop, hub and engine out 1st. Then remove the wings so we can get it back to the hanger. The engine has to be striped and crankshaft inspected for cracks etc. May as well get the heads flowed and ceramic coat the pistons wile its apart. Has to be sent to Melbourne for this. Not sure of the extent of damage yet:( With aircraft it is always worse than it looks.

Like station airstrips in Western Queensland. Pilot makes a couple of low passes first to move the livestock off the strip.

If hitting a small dog results in that sort of damage, imagine landing on a couple of thousand Merino wethers, or using a 1500kg Tobermory in lieu of brakes.

Nasty.

How come the propellor is not all mangled? Is it just short enough not to hit the ground even without the wheels down?

Damage is a bit nasty:( 16k for engine strip down. The Giles G200 is all composite and had a 25K paint job. Only had 100hrs on new 390 engine.

Anyway enough said.....:( Some pics for you.

Was wondering the same, there looks to be some damage on the RH blade but no tip damage.

At least you didn't get told to expedite clearance of the runway, and pull the undercarriage instead of the flaps, like one guy at Sydney, the following 747 was delayed :o:o

The prop is composite so very flexible and has memory to go back into shape even with this impact. It's seen better days don't worry.
I think the composite prop has saved a lot of secondary damage, I'm sure the 390 will be OK. 25K worth US:eek:

You only managed to get the Defender in two out of the five outdoor shots. I'm not sure that is acceptable on this forum.

I guess the little dog imposed stresses in directions the gear was not designed to deal with.

I assume that if it skidded 150 meters, it must have been traveling at a fair clip at the moment of impact. Was it landing or taking off?

Landing. Had 2 dogs. A pup tied up and old dog lose:( Never trust the buggers.

Yea I thought I'd get toasted if the 120 of one of my Rangies didn't get in the picture:D

Good thing the Defender is in the AFTER shot, not the BEFORE:

I was thinking that. Funny thing was when the strike took out both wheels I thought it must be like the durallium undercarriages we had - and it was!

just found this thread pedro,
actually had a 'puta' melt down last week.
i was approached to do the Cof A for this aircraft, but handed it on as i wasn't able.
i just returned from narromine, where i towed a Zenith down and back, for the RAA fly in, 'nat-fly'.

Rangier Rover, i presume Grant was flying it, and it was at your strip and your dog, not a nice way to start the day.
anyway the aircraft broke nicely and didn't break people, something to be said for that.

Thanks Harry for response to PM and an extra insight to what is involved.

Others interested..... Grant was flying it and all went bad. As I spend a lot of time with Grant and his air craft I feel obliged to help out this time. In the 80's I spent some time with CSIRO with my best mate who is also a LAME. So have a lot of interest in experimental aircraft including Gyro's and Ultra lights:eek:

A big thanks for the pics and contacts Harry.

Its going down like this:eek: We will be a lot more thorough on the way back if I have my way.

For a glorified subaru donk??? :o

A couple of blokes I know have built experimental aircraft. One machined his own engine from billet metal at home!!! The other fitted a couple of chinese copies of BMW R71 engines!!!

Crazy blokes...
