Hi Steve, I have used both the Maxis 753 and the Bighorns. If your main use is on road and 20/30 percent off road than I would reccommend the 753s. They are more agressive than the 751s, come in 10ply and are not too noisy on the road. Good grip wet and dry, sand and mud. Not as good in the mud as the bighorns but ok. The 751s, IMHO, are more of a highway tire with very occasionly mild offroad. Hope this helps as there is much written here about the Bighorns so I wont go into them.

I got a set of 245/75/16 Maxis Bravos fitted...they are very nice on the D2. Excellent grip in wet in particular and very good also in the dry. I like them better than the scorpion ATs I had. Dont do too bad in mud. I like the high ply rating for the sidewall and tread...very solid carcass and it makes towing a thing of beauty....no squishy tyres with 2 tonn on the back.

I have had a set of 235/85/16 Maxxis 751 Bravos on the Defender for about a year.

I have no complaints, but I can't claim to have tried to explore the limits of their capabilities or tested them to destruction.

I spoke to several other drivers who had them before I bought mine. All of them seemed happy. One of the people I spoke to had fitted them when he was living in the Kimberley and he thought they were pretty good.

I ended up not being able to get the Grabbers as soon as I would like - in fact they are out of that size until April. So I am getting 245/75/16 Maxxis 751 Bravos....meant to me a great tyre. 3 Ply sidewall and 10 ply tread in the LT.

So far the Maxxis are magic. The fact that they are a smaller footprint does not seem to make the truck handle any less well compared to the Pirelli's. They remind me very much, in the tread structure of the Michy XPCs that came on it when new, save that these are 245/75/16 (with 10 ply tread, 3 ply sidewalls, and 120 load rating...!).

I drove home the other day in torrential rain in Brisbane and at 60kph hitting 6-8 inches of water they cut through and didnt tug the wheel out of my hand...the Pirellis' big problem. They also dont tend to tram track. Cant wait to tow the boat - actually looking forward to sticking 2 tonn on the back end again. New shocks (Dobinsons) new Raw (big bore) steering dampener and new LT tyres...good combo I reckon.

The Maxxis dont look as aggressive as many ATs, like Pirelli Scorp AT, Generals Grabber AT2, or BFG, but my bet is that they will equip themselves well in the dry off road (I have had them on high speed dirt and corrugations already and they are much better than the Pirelli's which surprised me). The truck should still be a weapon in sand, because the OD is still the same, and it is the longitudinal footprint that is most important.

Just an update - I did some mud the other day and they did very well...no less well than the Pirellis I reckon. On road they are a weapon now that they have been run in.

yeah have been told that but have also been told 235/85R16 is good, but not how much modding i would have to do and how much they will effect engine performance.

I'm pretty sure i'm gonna go for the bighorns just have to nail a size.

Am tossing between 235/85 and 245/75.

Is anyone running either tyre on a standard hight D2. A lift is coming but need rubber first.
