Well Repco has lost my support from now on . Went there this morning to get a 308 water pump and was told the price was $101.95 :eek::eek::eek: . I told them they can keep it !!!! went to our local spare parts shop and got one for $63 . How the hell can they charge so much for the same product ?????

Yep, i have had similar price differences. When i had my VP Commodore i needed new front brake rotors for it. So i went to every spare parts place in Wagga. The cheapest was Auto 1 for at $85 each, so $170 for the pair, Rip Every Poor Customer Off wanted $170 for 1 . Same brand and everything. Once i picked myself up off the floor i left and got them from Auto 1.

Mind you i did get a win with REPCO, Stacey's pajero needed a new starter motor and Auto 1 quted me $340 and repco had one for $250, not sure if it was the same brand or not, but it works fine.

But 9/10 times REPCO is highly over priced.

I found that it pays to check them all every time Mick. But repco are usually dearer for parts but not always. They can be reasonable on some excessaries.

hey guys,

i agree with ya micky, tell ya what though BURSONS are not any better!!!!

Went there to get a fan belt for my D1 and they wanted $76 bucks worth, went to Melbourne landrover and got it for $32 and the funny thing was that at bursons it was not a genuine product and they wanted $$$$$ for it!!!!

honestly sometimes it does pay off to call the landrover and other dealers to see there prices.

O.K people now that were on the bash REPCO and others bandwagon.

I need to get a second set of tools to work on my SIII and Rangie while I leave my regular tools down the coast with my Land Rover projects. (Who needs to cart dozens of Kg of tools 160 Km each way everytime I go to the farm.

So where in Sydney should I go to get quality metric and AF spanners and not get ripped off? (Mind you I don't mind paying a what tools are worth.)

Bunnings have a good range as well as Mitre10 . brands to look for are Stanley, sydchrome , kinchrome , kingcraft and even supatool have lifted their game of late . Now if you have a home loan handy you could get some Snap On tools :p:angel:

Isn't there a tool retailer in the eastern suburbs?
I'm sure I saw a place called "the tool shed" on Oxford street? They may not carry the snap on brand but I believe the carry a knock off version. Stick on, belt on something like that.

Otherwise go to toolies or total tools something like that.

Quite often you'll see a boxed set of Crescent ... seem reasonable quality and generally <$200. Normally available all over, even Dick Smith.

I have a set and whilst I'm sure they're not trade quality, they're not down in the same league as Supa Crap rubbish.

They seem to have a website Toolshed Australia (http://www.toolshed.com.au) but I can't see it because "shopping" is filtered at work, as the Snap-On (http://www.snapon.com)site is filtered for the same reason.

I just bought from them a 1kg fire extinguisher for $20 and a fire blanket for $10, quite good I thought. I've always owned cars that Repco simply wouldn't stock parts for so can't speak from that side.

By the way.

REPCO is actually Re.P.Co or Replacement Parts Company.

You sometimes see a little plate on the side of engine blocks done in the 1950's with the full name.

PS Dobbo, still have not had a chance to look that Tool Shed company up. Do they have anything to do with Toolex or similar? Toolex have an outlet over in Lillyfield

Yeah, i thought so aswell. I asked him if they were carbon fibre ones from the Ferrari F1 team that they didnt want or something. :D They were just plain Jane DBA brake rotors, the same as what Auto 1 had, same part code and everything. Not sure if they dropped their price once i told them how much Auto 1 was charging or not, probably didnt some other poor sap will pay it i suppose

can you buy snap on tools off the shelf anywhere? I thought they were only avaiable from those trucks that drive around. I dont think i have ever seen a store selling snap on stuff.

I bought some supa-tool stuff from auto 1 in bathurst ages ago just to keep in the car, was a socket set and spanner set in one. I stopped using alot of the spanners and stuff i had in the shed cause this set does almost everything i need except the bigger nuts and bolts on mounts around the diff etc. The only thing is should have is a 13mm spanner and it would be pretty much perfect. Cost me half the price of a kingchrome or sidchrome set and i havent bent or broken a thing and i use them all the time, the ratchet is good quality. The salesman told me that supa-tool is sidchromes cheaper side line brand, not sure if its true, but it wouldnt suprise me if they were the same tools. I also have a small sidchrome socket set, larger kinchrome socket set and some stanely screw drivers. All good quality stuff.

My dad was an old-school spannerman, and taught me to appreciate the value of quality tools, and the right tools for the job. If he didn't have it, and couldn't buy it, he'd make it. The garage was full of custom tools for highly specific jobs.

Anyway, when I got past the 'starter kit' we'd gradually put together for me, I went out and splashed $40,000 on a lovely Sidchrome set, back in '97. :o

'course, I did get a free Defender 300Tdi wagon thrown in.:D

...I need to get a second set of tools to work on my SIII and Rangie ....

I've found Metrinch to be really good, especially for a 2nd set of tools. I carry Metrinch spanners & sockets in the vehicle to lighten the size & weight of the tool box. I got my spanners over the net from the USA, and managed to get the sockets locally in Melbourne some time later. I don't know about Sydney, but worth considering the brand as an option, especially for an AF / Metric combination of bolts.

They used to do some impressive engineering in the old days. My father had an FJ ute (grey motor) to which he fitted a Repco HiPower head. It was cross-flow with twin down-draft Webers and, with a four-speed box, the old FJ was as quick as the first-generation Holden/Falcon V8s.

mick if you go spend $80 to register a buisness that has anything to do with auto stuff you can set up a cod account with repco and you'd be amazed at how much cheaper it is i pay about 60% of what they generally quote on parts

They seem to have made everything more accountable these days. It used to be easy to get trade price on stuff but now the staff dont have any flexibility and are controlled by the computerized systems they have.

I miss the days when I used to get staff price on some stuff just because I did a fair bit of courier work for one of the stores.
